since september 2011 my son has seen the light and he bought his Niva. it's a 2003 MPI with (then) 68000 km when we bought it: since then a few changes have been made on the car: original Niva alloys 16 inch, a bull bar and side bars this week i've installed a new LPG set up, with 4 seperate gas injectors and seperate LPG ecu. You don't feel if it's running on petrol or on gas ecu just lieing around for the moment

i don't know yet, but i think 12-13 l/100 km (most of the time short distances and it's cold out here). petrol costs 1.5 euro and LPG 0.6 euro, so it's a big difference in costs

That LPG convertion sounds so tempting... Can you paste some more pics with the LPG items or are those you have on the only ones needed?

this valve was used for the previous installation. It backfired a lot because lpg was provided before the throttle valve. Excess gas exploded sometimes in the inlet manifold, destroying the air cleaner housing in the process. This valve opens when pressure (explosion) builds up. the lpg distributor. It gives lpg only tho the injector that asks for it, according software specs the gas evaporator, turns liquid gas into gas. The evaporator has engine coolant running trough it. one of the 4 gas injectors. Mounted very close to the cilinder head to prevent backfire the lpg MAP sensor. A MPI has standard no MAP sensor where the lpg loom comes in the engine compartment the other side: lpg ecu and relais the car ecu. The loom has been cutted 9 times to feed the lpg ecu

Darius, rather get your Niva back on the road before you consider a LPG conversion.

It's is the refilling of the tanks that is the problem here in South Africa. There is no structure to service the public demand for bulk LPG

we did 450 km with 57 liter lpg. Makes 12,6 liter per 100 km. Not so bad considering we drove most of the time 120 km/u. About the costs: 57 liter lpg cost 32 euro. At a 12.6 liter consumption 100 km cost 7,05 euro. On petrol with a consumption of 10,5 liter and a 1,47 euro per liter cost that would be 15,4 euro, so pretty much x2

Hi ladanivabelgium, I am mightely impressed with your son's LPG Niva! The LPG system is very sophisticated, especially compared to one that I used years back on a four cylinder VW Passat. The saving you make is a no-brainer in Europe, that's for sure! Sadly here in South Africa and Africa it is a no, no! LPG is not cheaper here than petrol or diesel and as was mentioned earlier the infrastructure to get LPG for a vehicle is just not there - far less in the remote areas, let alone in the neigbouring countries.
A tip from a fool; a Niva has a far too low compression ratio for an efficient LPG conversion. So, if you want to get amazing fuel consumption cost saving with your LPG system on a Niva, increase the compression ratio drastically. It will not make the engine less reliable if you just run LPG (LPG "combustion" is much cooler and cleaner than petrol/diesel). You can also extend the service intervals to minimum 15 000 to 20 000 km if you use LPG and very high quality "Synthetic" engine oil (do not worry if the oil looks black even - it shows that the service pack in the oil is working well, not that the lubrication is not there anymore). Real synthetic oil with the sophisticated LPG injection you use will easily make your oil last 50 000km, but of course you will not have the b I mean the nerve for that if you see how black the oil is!
Your son's Niva is a beaut!
Regards,
Fanus

Fanus, when time comes i will get the head off and increase compression. But for now i have plenty of work on my own Niva. I once did my own TBI on LPG: took 1.5 mm from the head and remapped the ecu. Indeed: amazing results. I sold it 7 years ago and it' still going strong with now 185000 km on the counter
