as you all know i drive a Niva diesel. The front diff is not bolted to the engine, but to a separate mount. The biggest disadvantage of that system is that the entire diff is supported with only the 6 small M8 bolts. The thread in the housing is ofcourse from aluminum and that's not so very strong. It happened on more then one occasion that the bolts came loose, even when mounted with loctite. The bolts came loose so many times that the thread in my housing was almost completely gone. I've repaired it now, and hopefully once and for all. a broken bolt in my (slightly dirty ;D ) front diff after a bit of a clean i can start repairing. First i was lucky enough to get the broken bolt out with an 'easy out set' example of the set: first you drill a matching hole and then you turn the tool counter clock wise in the bolt. then you make the hole bigger with a matching drill for 10mm thread. Normally that would be 8.5 mm, but in aluminum i use 8.2 mm. Then you make 10 mm thread with a matching tap. Then you are ready to put in the v-coil. That makes new, steel thread in the hole. my 8mm set: the new piece of thread: now in the diff housing: the special design makes it impossible to remove the v-coil thread once it's in there. I've done all 6 holes. Hope the bolts stay in there now

Admittedly mine just bolt up the CV joints, not support the weight of the diff, but I use straight through bolts/nuts instead of the original studs. Helicoils re great - used them on the calipers when replacing hoses after the thread stripped in one unit. Regards, John

If hole is drilled properly and cleaned and the proper thread starter is used helicoils (generic name) should not require Loctite or similar or at least that is what I was taught when on a chainsaw maintenance/repair course. Never had any coils come out BUT those did not have a diff hanging on them and the studs were 4-6 mm dia. Will be interesting to hear Jan's view.

i use green loctite, but not on the v-coils. They're mounted without any loctite.
