A few weeks ago i found a Niva 1600 on an auction site. I did not place a bid but took the phone and made an appointment with the owner. I took the trailer with me because i was sure i would take the niva home with me ;D This Niva was stored in a barn for 13 years, just as the Savanne. The last time it ran was in 2000. When i got home with it i first checked the oil and coolant level. Then i put a battery in it and some fresh petrol. After a few sprays of brake cleaner in de carburetor it fired up!. After a stand still of almost 13 years! I can't drivre it yet to test it, al the brake and clutch hydraulics are stuck. I will try to get it registered this summer and start restauration in autumn. But first i wood like to put the TD in my Niva D Enough chatter, pics:

Plan is to make the body sound again. i will replace both front fenders, the front, and 1 sill. Both doors and the hood will be replaced also. Finally it will be sprayed, probably in the same color red. next items will be overhauled: - engine (full overhaull) - brakes (full overhaull) - suspension and steering (full overhaull)
the gear box will be replaced by a 5 gear box the diffs 10/43 will remain.
In june 2013 the regulations regarding old timers change in belgium. This Niva will be offically an oldtimer then. now she's 28 years old. With the regulations now she'll turn oldtimer on 30 years of age. With the new regulations that will be 25 years. Costwise is that a very big difference: yearly tax will be 30€ instead of 85€, insurance will be 120€ instead of 400+€

I am sure she will look great - best of luck with the rebuild.
Compared to over here it is very expensive to run a car in Europe/UK with all the taxes and compulsory insurance no matter what age.

Marius Hi Marius I managed to transfer my no claims bonus here so my insurance is less than I paid is SA. If you watch what CO2 band your car falls into you can pay no road tax. Peugeot 207 1.4 HDI no tax. If the MGB was not exempt as historic it would cost £220 a year . I except there will be different rules in other parts of the EU. Ronnie

Hi Marius If I am reading the tax bands correctly a Niva will be £225 a year for road tax. I know this sounds a lot in Rands but a lot of people here seem to have a lot of money, even the ones who do not work. Ronnie

She sure is a beauty. There is just something very special about those 1600's. Please keep us updated with the repairs, Jan. Good Luck.
