I hav ecome across an interesting impass, I am replaceing all the universal joints on both of my drive/prop shafts (4 of). After not being able to get the first few in I got my calipers and had a measure up. The outside cap measurements on all of my new unis is 71 mm the measurement on the yokes is 69mm (inside circlip grooves). They are standard Lada unis, they look exactly the same as the ones I took out, I can machine the unis down but surely I shouldnt have to, any brilliant ideas or past experiences. B

Hi Bob
Something in the back of my mind tells me that the U-joint size was changed to a bigger dia shaft in the middle 90s?

I thought the larger UJ's came in at roughly the same time as the 5 speed box? My '87 1.6 had them as standard. Regards, John

Get some 1700 props, and you sorted.

Strange one Bob as you get 8 different sized circlips for the UJoints! The older Nivas UJoint prefix on the part number starts with a 2101-, whilst the newer type starts with a 21211-? Perhaps you can contact Pavel for the type you are looking for - instead of buying new props? Marius

The different circlips are different weights used for balanceing when the nivas are new. I was lead to believe that 1600s had 26mm uni caps and 1700s had 28mm uni caps, but also for some reason I think the uni cap size is date sensitive. I dont know if the unis differ in any other way apart from cap diameter,

When I found this out Marius I laughed like hell as I couldnt imagine Lada getting that fussy with vibration when the average Niva shakes quite a bit!!!

Yes Mate ,Just hope the crosses dont try to punch the ends out of those caps as they would have to be very thin now in the centres i would imagine .Cheers Trev.

Im all out of ideas Marius, absolutly all out. These unis are Lada parts, the drive shafts are Lada parts, the old unis are Lada parts and the real clincher the old unis are the same as the new ones!!!!!! I dont know how they fitted in. Ill cut an old cap in half at work to see how thick they are.

When I change the UJs I use a larg(ish) hammer to get things moving. If I get annoyed with the thing, I sometimes find it necessary afterwards to check the gap between the ears haven't closed up a bit? I do occasionally get VERY annoyed!! lol !! Regards, John

Hey Bob, what exactly did you machine ? the cup OD, or the spider ID ? I have a 1.7 carbie, and it has dia. 28.05mm x 71mm overall length. I've been struggling to find an SA equivalent.

Cap cut in half, they seem to be 3mm thick so after me takeing 1mm off each one they proberly have enough strength to hang in there but and as we all know theres always a but if one does let me down I will have to do exactly the same process again. I dont really like this.
