Good Morning Guys. CERATOTH is now well on the road to a fully recovery after her 'bath' and I hope to be posting photographs soon once I've put the seats back. It occured to me that it might be a good idea to keep a spare starter motor relay (and other relays ?) just in case of 'problems down the line'. I have tried to find details on the LOCSA site of exactly what I should ask for at my local Auotozone/Midas but without any success. It seems that there are different types and like the idiot that I am I did not think to take the original in whilst CERATOTH was in pieces......and I'm not taking her apart again willingly ! Thanks and regards, Keith and CERATOTH

Good news Keith! Glad you are almost finished. You don't know how lucky you really were that you did not get a hydraulic lock in that episode regards Spikes

There is a major thought conflict when going for a "swim" do I shut down and potentially prevent damage from water ingestion or do I give it herbs and try to charge out!

Hi Bob
As long as the motor is still running keep it going and charge out. As long as it is running and you have a snorkel the water cannot be sucked up the exhaust. To help avoiding the motor stalling turn the idle speed up before entering the water.

Hi all If I remember correctly, Kieth was behind stalled cars when the incident happened. Presumably he had the NIVA shut down before he and Li had to abandon ship. Which would explain the non ingress of water into the engine. AND a heap of luck as well

Hi Spikes, you are 'spot on' :-) What I had was a VW Golf 'floating' in front of me; which turned onto its side when the water really hit and a Toyota (Toy Boata ?) stalled behind me. High bank to my left and centre wall of the underpass to my right = 'nowhere to go' Kept the engine running until the water reached the bottom of the window and then it was time to switch off and 'bail out' (Li was at home reading magazines !) Switched everything off and tried to open the door....couldn't due to the force of the water :-( Climbed out the window, sat on the bank and watched the water (actually the 'wave' from the water hitting the Golf, now on its side,) going over the top of CERATOTH and thought 'bugger'. The rest as they say is history.....went back about an hour later, water had subsided, broken cars everywhere, switched on and drove home :-) :-) Now can anybody please reply to my first post on this thread and tell me what type of spare starter relay I should get ? ;D Regards to all at LOCSA and thank you all so much for helping me get CERATOTH 'fighting fit' again for the Johannesburg traffic and potholes....which are more of a challenge than the 'bath'. Best wishes, Keith and CERATOTH

Hi Keith
The relay`s are all standard 12 volt 4 pin relays available at any spares shop. The branded makes like Hella used to be the best, but my experience with Hella since they moved production to China is they are as bad as any others from China. I had 2 dud`s out of (I think) 8. If you have headlight wash / wipe the relay is the same except it is 5 pin.

Thanks Ronnie. Nice to know that you still have time for us 'lighties' given your hectic life changes at the moment. Once again all the best for the relocation to the UK and remember to wrap up warm :-) Regards and best wishes, Keith and CERATOTH

Good Evening Guys. No problems since CERATOTH had her bath last year but today the starter motor started playing up. Click then click (then panic) then away she went. Starting with the simplest thing first (rather than taking out the starter motor and finding nothing wrong with it !) I'm going to change the starter relay....if I can find it ! Anybody know where it is located ? Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH.

Clean the terminals on the starter but Im 99% sure its your solenoid that is on its way out. In the spare part list there is a local replacement that need a bit of modding.

Thanks Charles. Stupid question......just how to I get to the terminals to clean them ! I've tried just about every body position to get access to them but there always seems to be a lot of 'other metal bits' in the way ! Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH. ps where is the startermotor relay located ?

I find it easiest to remove the alternator.
There is 4 relays under the dash just to the left of the centre. I think the one on the right is the starter relay. Just unplug it and try and start it to check. Should not even click if it is the right one.
The clicking of your starter tells me that the relay is doing its job, by trying to engage the starter but the solenoid does not want to pull in, that is why i say its the solenoid.

Thanks again Charles. I never thought about the clicking meaning that the relay is working. I'll leave it alone and get CERATOTH into my local auto-electrician and get him to have a look at the starter motor for me. If that doesn't work I shall order a complete new unit from Pavel. Thanks again (what would I do without you guys !) Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH.

You don't need the whole starter, just the solenoid (part that sits on top of the starter). Its not that difficult to remove.
remove battery connections remove alternater wires remove alternator remove starter (you will need 2x long extension for a socket and wrench) remove solenoid from starter and replace.
Then put everything back in reverse order
Ari
PS Pavel doesn't have any solenoids listed but if you send him an email, he will find one for you.

Keith, Ari never mentioned the 12 beers required to provide sustenance and energy during the process.
If you need help, have your passport handy so that they let you out the East Rand, and are prepared to come to my side of the world, I am more than willing to assist. I cant drive atm, Sharkie has taken a holiday, without permission I might add, and not is not available.

Hi Guys. Logged onto the Ladapower website today to order a complete (ie including the solenoid) starter motor. It doesn't show one or at least I could not find one. I'm going to send Pavel an e-mail and see what happens . Watch this space. Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH.

Thanks Spikes. I e-mailed ladapower at around 1415 and got a reply giving prices and shipping costs at 1435 ! How's about that for service ! I have ordered an oem Katek which is going to cost me $149 plus $84 shipping. Having seen Nikki's posting I'd rather 'take the hit in $' than mess about with repairs. Regards to all at LOCSA. Keith and CERATOTH. ps. does anybody know how Nikki is doing ?

Hi Guys.
I'll help as well. Getting pretty good with those long extentions and sockets around the gearbox and starter.
I replaced my solenoid last year and its has started clicking now again. Will do what Charles has said and check the connections first.
Regards Spencer

Chris, I dont think there are enough beers around for Keith, you and I over the time needed to replace the starter!
Yesterday was a "dry" day, we only had 6 beers and half a bottle of whiskey between the 3 of us in replacing that clutch, but it was pouring with rain. Are we gonna catch up today?
