Hi Christo
Have you checked the thermostat and radiator cap. I assume if you have a new radiator you will have a new cap so check the thermostat. There should be NO water circulating in the radiator till the thermostat opens. I don`t know much (anything) about golf radiators but was it designed for 1700 motor?.

how did you put in the fan? At the front or at the rear? Golf fans are designed to sit at the rear, pulling in the air, instead of pushing. is the fan rotating in the right direction?

start with the easy things first....like mentioned by our skilled moderators
1.rad cap 2.decent coolant 3.no leaky pipes or clamps and constant pressure. 4.fan blowing the right way, the right size, and properly ducted and shrouded. 5.fan switch. 6.thermostat
now for the dreaded and no often thought of part... Ive learned with high performance builds that coolant an radiators are very specifically designed and purpose built along with the cooling system in each car...
what ive learned is that you cant just replace radiotors and or interchange them...your engin and radiator has and needs X amount of water. thath amount of water takes X time to heat up and then the thermostat opens and every thing gets going. however if you use less or even more ater than the engine was desined for you start screwing with the physics and design of it.
here is a very simple layout or breakdown of the theory For instance 2liters of water will rach boiling point much quicker then 5 liters of water if youre using the same heat source, and the same going down in capacity as well..2 liters will coolof quicker than 5 liters so you have a bit of a catch 22...however I can honestly say that in my experience more water capacity is better...with regards to take longer to boil...
how does this affect you.well from stripping my lada I Noticec the following, thers a very large radiator capacity for the engines displacement, which means that its in need of substantial amount of water to be circulated to be sufficient0(keeping in mind that the vechile was designed to operate in sub zero conditions and not the african sun)now if you place that same vechile in our climate conditions and again I state that this is my experience and opinion and not necessarilly the correct one, youll need an even bigger radiator and water capacity..and if memory serves me correct the golf radiator is not as thick as the lada's...therefore not as effective...
another thing to remember is that anything behind the radiator is a restriction and therefore will restrict airflow even a fan, a fan is only effeicient in city traffic, anything under an estimated 30-40km/h is the fan actually working and from thereon its a complete drag and waste of radiator space...keep in mind more fans is actually restricting more...youre vechile should reach and stay at optimum temps at about 80km/h without fluctuating if driven on an even road.
This is only my opinion and experience in high horsepower builds...hope it helps

HI. Had a vw temp swicth in my lada and they tend to switch at around 100 deg on the lada gauge. And at around 90 deg in real time even though its says 86 deg on it.

The mk2 Gti has very much the same size radiator as the lada. I use it in my 7mge hilux with no problems.

Hi Christo
How difficult is it to fit the VR6 / Golf radiator. Did you need to do much modification >.
