Hi Stephan and welcome to the forum.
Why did you decide to change the car into a 4x2?

Good Day Marius, Charles and Others,
I decided to convert my Lada from a 4x4 to a 4x2, due to economic and practical reasons, e.g. I use to get around the 5-6Km/lt in the 4x4 config, where as I am now getting around 9-10km/lt in the 4x2 config.
The Lada was originally bought by my youngest daughter, but she encountered so many problems with the Lada since she bought it, that she decided that she was not going to drive it any more, so I took it over and spent some time and money to get it running perfectly, I think it is now running better than new!
The problem with Lada's (my opinion only), is that it is not a all round vehicle, e.g. it is not like any other expensive 4x4, that one can get in and travel 1000kms in comfort and then go 4x4'ing in comfort and that is what everyone expects! Everyone wants a new Rolls for the price of a old Mini...
I LOVE Lada's, but need it to be practical for me, in town and on the open road, thus I decided to turn my current Lada into a 4x2, which is practical and economical for me and I must add that I will not swap it for any other expensive SUV or 4x4, I still want to do a lot more to it in terms for comfort and luxury modifications.
I have kept the Engine and Gearbox standard and in their original positions, thus I have just taken the rear Propshaft and extended it to fit directly between the gearbox and rear Diff. It worked out perfectly and she runs like a well oiled sowing machine!
I had to make one or two small modification, but they where minor and took me only two days from start to finish for this whole conversion.
I have to date done a lot of other work (mechanically) on the Lada as well , Repaired Carburator, Engine, Gearbox, with New - Stainless F/flow Exhaust, Tyres, Brakes, Shocks & Springs, Electric Cooling Fan, Modified Cooling System, etc.
I hope that this has answered some of your questions?
Thank you for the support!
Kind Regards,
Stephan JSJ Customs

Hi Stephan
Thanks for sharing. Your cooling modifications will be of interest to our members. Did you do more than fitting the electric fan?

Hi Stephan I find your petrol consumption is not even close to what I used to get with the 2 Niva`s I have had to date. What you are getting in 4x2 mode is close to my consumption in 4x4 mode on both vehicles, and that included driving at 120kph where possible. The first one I used every day for work and my normal months driving was at least 5000km. I also did a good number of runs every year where I was travelling nearly 1000km non stop. On some of those trips I would do 7000km in 3 weeks. My experience is not the same as yours. I must mention I did service every 10000km without fail. Ronnie

Hi Stephan
Thanks for sharing your experience - much appreciated and I am glad the conversion sorted your fuel consumption issue - however I have been very fortunate in that department.
I fully agree with you that the Niva is definitely not a great all rounder and comfort has never been the number one priority on the Soviet designers mind when they created this little quirky monster but we all love it for what it is.
I would like to see a pic of your prop shaft setup if at all possible.
Regards Marius
