Where ever James took the propshaft to have told him it is unrepairable, I don't have all the details yet.
I am getting a second opinion on Friday

If a propshaft is bent you can toss it. Also when they say they can balance it they lie. It does get balanced but only at a certain rpm. Its they just in balance at that rpm. Also if a piece of pipe isnt straight anymore no matter how good you are it can not be balanced. I have seen many gearboxes broken because of propshafts out of balance.
Just my 2c.

To me, it did not look bent, just the stuffed UJ, will see what they have to say tomorrow.

Unless you ended up on a rock - which is a sure way to bend it - the prop shaft should be fine.

Ok, so the story goes like this:
Gearbox pulled and replaced with my original one due to a bearing failure, gear lever reassembled (yes we took out the inner 3 nuts instead of the outer 3), tc put back, front and rear propshafts put back (rear with a new one from somewhere in Strydon Park for R2800( details to be provided)), jump started due to flat battery and discoverd that it wont stay in first gear, as soon as clutch replaced it pops out.
Tried adjusting clutch to no avail, gonna swop gear levers tomorrow as a last resort, as I am pretty sure it is the selector fork or a problem with the gear / syncro. Holding it in gear does not help.
Will keep you posted.

It's probably the syncro AND trying to hold it in gear is not a good idea as it will cause only more damage. You can try and turn the syncro the other way around - but I will probably get shot for this advice!

So last night, after the car stood for 24 hours, I decided what they heck, let me try and it works perfectly!
All I can think of is that the selector was stuck and with soaking in oil overnight it got released somehow.

Actually, I think it was fear of the auto electrician ...
Spikes or any moderator, can we rename this thread to James's Niva please?
He just came to collect it from me and it started and we promptly reversed and drove up and down the driveway a few times and then the wiring around the steering column caught fire.
End ups that the indicator wire shorted, disconnected it and he has driven home, so next weekend is a rewiring job.

Tjeers Steve the problem will probably come back as soon ast the gb warms up, or when you stress the first gear (descending a hill in first gear, braking on the engine)
