Hi all,
This isn't a new 'issue' it's just something I kind of accepted and didn't think that something might actually be wrong.
As soon as I go into fifth gear there is a very distinct vibration.. almost a massage when in the drivers seat. Any idea what could be causing this?
Cheers,
D

It isn't speed specific. It is just as soon as I go into fifth it starts to vibrate.

I think that was something that the mechanic checked when I took it in for a service.. Though if it is something that could cause vibrations in only 5th gear I will definitely get it checked?
Thanks Charles!

The nut must not only be tight, the lockwasher must be installed and the tabs bent over

Hey guys, Thanks a bunch.. Is this something that would only cause vibrations in 5th gear? I'm just trying to work out how that would work. I have said it before and I am certain I will say it again, please excuse my noobness. D

If the nut is loose the whole 5th gear is loose on the shaft and moves backwards.

I have said it before and I am certain I will say it again, please excuse my noobness. D Hi Damian If and when the nut on the end of the shaft comes loose the 5th gear will jump and eventually damage the 5th gear assembly. I don't think it has anything to do with your vibration though - but who knows... Have a look at the rubber end cap on the shaft (presuming you have 1.7 with that setup) - if there is play between on the shaft and the end cap replace it with a new one that should fit snugly over the shaft. It actually makes a huge difference. The relationship between the 5th gear and the vibration on your Niva may well be speed related as you would normally travel at 100+km in 5th gear and this is normally the speed where you would pick up "the trademark Niva vibration". This however doesn't automatically mean that you wouldn't pick up any other vibration at any other given speed though but the the Nivas trademark vibration is at around 105-110kmh. Other important things to look for when you want to eliminate vibration>> - Check that the intermediate shaft runs straight - if the gear sticks inside the cab moves like "dancing sticks" you need to adjust the TC/gearbox alignment
- Check for cracks on the rubber doughnut on the intermediate shaft - remember the rubber end cap as mentioned above - you will probably find it at the other end inside the intermediate shaft.
- Check that all the prop shafts are properly greased (at regular intervals)
- Check for cracks on the rubber mountings on the TC
- Check that all the engine and gearbox mountings
- If the vibration still persists have the prop shafts balanced with a PRO - they will immediately pick up any issues on the shafts.

Hi Marius, I will do my best to check everything that you have mentioned this weekend. Here's hoping. The vibration starts as soon as you go into fifth.. Say I change from 4th to 5th at 90km/h. The vibration starts immediately. If I change back to 4th and maintain the same speed the vibration goes away completely. It's like a low level vibration if that makes sense.. Like the drivers seat is fitted with an electric massager. D
