Hi all,
I have sent my Lada in for a service. I do plan to do the servicing myself in the future. But I figured since it hasn't had a service since I got it I should take it in and get a professional mechanic check it out.
He says that there are a couple of things that need to be replaced. I don't have a list (I hope it's a small list) yet. I do know that I am going to need brake drums.
Does anyone know of any Cape Town suppliers that will have stock.. and if so any ballpark ideas as to how much they will cost?
Thanks!

You sure its the drums, and not the shoes?

I just chatted to them on the phone briefly and they said drums.. They are going to email me later with everything that it needs.
Sorry I just realised I should have probably have posted this under spare parts.

Come to think of it, it doesn't have to be Cape Town.. Any where in SA will do I suppose.
Either that or I could order from Ladapower (they are cheap from there) but I have no idea how long the shipping would take. Any ideas?

3 weeks with EMS, whats wrong with the drums. They are aluminium with a steel lining for braking, so the lining should be removable and replacable at an eng shop.

Hi Ari
Brake drums are really a safety issue, I would rather buy new than trying to re sleeve them.

But how much of your braking is at the back wheels Ronnie, most will be at the front, especially when braking hard due to the nose dropping and the tail lifting, the load sensor will cut the rear brakes percentage even more.

Does anyone know if the Ladadoctor or Ventz or anyone else keep spares such as brake discs in stock per chance?

Disks or drums? Disks are available from autozone at about R350 each.

Hi Ari
It is just something I would not do. Apart from that, I reckon at least half of the Nivas on the road no longer have the valve still in place.

I bought some DR 3203 discs and took them to the mechanic.
He seems to reckon that they won't fit. They are the right size and fit on.. but they are.. 'less thick' (for lack of better phrasing) than the ones that are on there at the moment.
He is going to try them, but unfortunately he isn't open tomorrow. So I will only know on Monday. :/

He said that they were very worn and that they couldn't be machined as then they would be too thin.

Hi all,
Just spoke to the mechanic..
He said that the DR 3203 discs do fit.. however, if you brake the wheels won't be able to be turned. He said to fix this he would need to machine the calipers slightly.
Should I go ahead with this or maybe try and find brake discs that fit 100%?
Thanks,
D

What is he up too, that is normally the point of braking, too stop the wheels turning.
See if you can get some pictures uploaded before you go any further.

I think he means turning as in turning left and right. I'll upload pics now.

I checked the list again after posting the link. I see that the data in the list gives the Discs as DR3203 while the original source gave it as DR6303 which may be where the size difference comes from.
My apologies! I have corrected the spares lists

Thank you Spikes... Autozone says that the one that I bought is the DR6303. I am going to take both discs to them tomorrow morning to get to the bottom of this.
Thanks all.

Hi there,
Turns out Autozone had given me the incorrect discs. They were labelled as FD303 as they said that they had changed model numbers. But they weren't the DR6303 so they gave me my money back (R375 for the two discs)
They didn't have in stock so they directed me to a company in Parow, who has them for R450 exc VAT each.

Hope you come right now.
I had a similar problem with Autozone supplying an incorrect air filter in a correctly marked box.
Please advise.

Thanks Spikes, Luckily they fitted so brakes are sorted. Now to just sort out the petrol smell in the cab and I'll get her back. Cheers, D
