Hi! ;D I'm a brand new member of this nice club! I just have got a 1.7 sidekick niva 2000...nice car!!! The previous owner took off the 5th gear,as i read everywhere gives quite a few probs...
Do you suggest me to replace it or just to leave it like that?
My plan is to have quite a lot of trips with my new buddy!
Thanks for answering!!!
Kind regards...pizzo

Hi Pizzo and welcome.
Perhaps you will find that the 5th gear and all the other components necessary are still in place - but they are probably all buggered. I am almost certain that the previous owner did not replace the box with a proper 4 speed gearbox - therefor you will find that your car would not be running much faster than 80-90 km/h without the engine revs going through the roof - so to speak.
With 5th gear in place the car should happily reach 120-130 km/h on a level surface.
I would recommend that you replace the required components. You can import the parts cheaply from overseas. Unfortunately our local suppliers tend to be very expensive when it comes to these components.
There has bee a lot of discussion on the 5th gear on this forum, but unfortunately some of these discussions turned ugly - but I would still recommend you to have a look in our technical section as there are vital information to keep the gearbox healthy.

Welcome to the forum.
I agree if you are planning on doing longer trips, fuel consumption will be better with a working 5th gear.

The 4th gear ratio in the 5 speed box and 4 speed box will be the same.

I must admit that my experience with a standard 1600 has been a very brief and once off affair but I can't remember the revs complaining as much in fourth gear as it did in my 1700 when I had no 5th gear. Anyways the driving experience with a working 5th gear compared to only 4 gears is worlds apart and highly recommended.

Thank's everybody for your tips!!!
Very kind to answer so quikly!!!
With the 4th gear i can easily reach 100-110 at 4000 4500 rpm...by your experience is this a proper 4 gearbox or has been taken off just the 5th?
Thanks again gents!!!
p.s. today i had a problem...it was like a lack of petrol as I pushed on the accelerator...could it be the petrol pump?...i sow that the meccanic one has been replaced with an electric one!
Kind regards
Pizzo

Yes it can be the petrol pump or maybe just a dirty filter. Or timing that is too slow or the carb thats not set up correctly.

If you're running in 5th gear your revs should be 3500 @ 120km/h.
