Hi Guys I've spent a lot of time reading the forum and it seems there are some really passionate lada owners out there. So after looking around a bit I found a Niva that I wanted. It's the TBI version, but woulve gone carb if id found a nice one. Recently resprayed (white) and looked in overall good condition. 76000 on the clock and apparently little offroading done in it. The owner drove it down from Mossel bay (im in CT), but unfortunately on the way the gear box decided it didnt like 4th anymore. The owner is now paying for the gearbox to be fixed in Somerset West before I take it. 2 weeks wait Should I be concerned about the gearbox faltering after only 76k on it? Also it has been turned into a 2 x4, but the owner says he will put it back to 4x4 for me now. Is this such a simple process? One last question. I possibly need to get new tyres(16"). Ive read the tyre thread and see Marius is a contact for 175 Nankangs. I really would prefer wider tyres though (mostly for the look I will concede). I see 195 is the widest one should go. But there are Nankang Ft-7 205/80R16T going for R1360 on tyretraders. Does anyone know other 195 or 205 options for 16" rims? Looking forward to being a lada owner. Steve

Welcome Steve I presume the 4th gear is jumping. Normally the issue is a broken thrust ring between the bell housing and the gearbox. It should be cheap and easy to repair. The "back to 4x4" can be as simple as refitting a removed prop shaft - or it can be quite an expensive repair on the front diff or the transfer case? Fitting new tyres is a personal choice as you've mentioned. many Nivas in South Africa run on oversized tyres with seemingly very little reported issues other than touching the body. You should also consider that the wider rubber will make the steering increasingly heavy and you run the risk of damaging the very scarce RHD steering box. Marius

Thanks Marius
Its just the prop shaft that needs to be reconnected Im told so Im sure it'll be alright.
I have some time to think about the tyres.
Ciao, Steve

Thanks everyone I hope the 4th gear issue is easily fixed then and its just the thrust ring to sort out. I was thinking to replace the clutch while the gearbox is out. I read you can get a kit from autozone for R1200 or so. While I wait im going to compile a list of things to do to the car such as oil changes. I found a list on the forum somewhere that someone had made on all the regular maintenance work that should be done, will have to search for it again. Hoping for a steep learning curve. Any suggestions to make my lada trouble free for the future would be helpful. Steve

Finally I have my Niva! Very happy with her so far and she drives like a dream (lots of rattling but plenty of grunt). Off to the wild coast tomorrow so will post an action shot soon

Nice. Silicone spray everywhere where dash panels meet does wonders.
