Problem

Hello Everyone, I am a proud new owner of a Lada Niva Sidekick.
Now I am totally new to the whole 4x4 thing in general and have no idea what to look for or anything like that. In the test drive I did test everything and all seemed fine.
With that said, While driving home with my new (private sale) Sidekick it made weird noises every now and then that sounded like a gearbox scratch but it was not the gearbox. It also felt like every now and then that there were some resistance on the wheels. There was also a kind of whistling sound that got louder from the diff lock and hi/low range leavers.
And just as I got home there was a sound that sounded like something broke like maybe a cv joint or something.
After switching off the car I tested all the gear levers and all of them went in without a problem.
I have not moved it again until I know what it might be and if it will cause more damage if I do.
Now I am thinking these things are all connected. Anyone have an idea what it might be?
Just as a side note: I am not at all disappointed in the purchase though. And am actually looking forward to working on the issue. ;D

Hi Charl ,
Gearbox and transfer case whine is normal. There is very little sound insulation material on the gearbox tunnel. First place to check would be the intermediate shaft coupling or doughnut. The four cv joints on the front side shafts will cause a knocking noise when turning or driving in a circle. Check for broken boots on the cvs

Hi Charl
The resistance at the wheels could be related to very very dry universal joints. They are very difficult to grease on the NIVA. Many owners remove the drive shaft to grease the ones in the UJ

Spikes,
The resistance on the wheels are not permanent. Its almost as if the diff lock goes on then off, (Im not saying it is the diff lock) but it has the same "resistance" the diff lock would have.

Hi Charles
It may be worth checking the bias valve operated by the rod from the axle. They have a history of jamming up but can be opened and cleaned.

The hand brake is fully released.
Thanks for all the info. I will make a list and go through all the possibilities just to make sure.
