Thanks for all the welcoms. Actually I only imported the last Niva. It was a '95, then the new 1700 series. Had a bad gearbox from the factory floor, and I eventually sold it to a dealer in Benoni. Cost me about R6000 in Russia and about half that amount more for a container from Germany, back then. That is probably the price of the container only these days. Now have a 1700i, I bought as a project from a dealer in Pretoria. It occured to me that one could import a new Niva and do the RHD conversion with used spares here. I suspect it wont be easy to get an import permit but thats the least of the problem. The Ruskis aren't exactly your friendly salesmen from your local McCarthy Motors dealership. Buying a car in Russia is not a matter of putting your money down and driving it out of the country. But then again thats all part of the adventure.

Hi Wim
Did you buy directly from the factory in Russia, or via an Agent elsewhere?
I assume shipment via Germany has been the cheaper route to South Africa?

Vaz, the manufacturer, has a depot in Moscow where you pay and collect the car. Ironically, the Ruskis preferred vehicles from private sellers who had bought at the factory and drove it up to Moscow to sell at a higher price. They used to say they know the car is ok if it had been driven the 1000km from the factory. Shipment from any European port is about the same. Its a matter of shopping around.

Very interesting indeed - information like this is simply not available at the other Lada related websites (with English as the dormant language) across the globe ........which obviously makes this website very special.

Russia is one country of those countries where one discovers that English is far less dominant than what some may like to think. In fact, a sure way to offend Russian officialdom is to presume that it is. But apparently even Russia has succumb to consumerism. Here is the way cars are sold these days. Hi
I wonder whether it will be easier to ask Nissan Or Renault to import one for you as they have now merged with Lada. They are already importing complete cars for themselves.

We should obviously try to support the local Agents as far as possible, but i must admit - the strong Rand at the moment makes private imports very attractive.......
Just think about it - Lada spare parts have become cheaper during the past two weeks !

A potential problem with converting a new LHD to RHD is the new Nivas are MPI and all the intake runners etc are on the RHS of the engine where RHD Nivas have their brake master cylinder etc etc, oh and Nivas are one of only a few cars which use different firewalls for LHD and RHD where as most manufactures use a one size does all approach to their firewalls. VAZ will make you a batch of RHD Nivas if you order 1000 or more!
