Hi
I wonder what it would cost to import a Lada Niva to SA kind of like that American Richard did to the USA.
Or maybe it would be cheaper to bring it in CKD (in kit form) and asemble it yourself.

Hi Ari
To import a Lada it would need to be new and right hand drive. I don`t think you can get RHD from the factory now.
Regards
Ronnie.

This is ironic, I am sussing out importing a Niva from SA! Ten years newer than mine and justification for a trip over to SA

Hi I also thought it would be great to drive down from Russia but as Ronnie says they probaly only making LHD's. I would be really cool to get 10 people to fly to Russia and drive down in a group too Ari

Hi Ronnie
Aren't you retired? which is kind of the same thing.
And think you would then have a brand spanking new lada and could use the old (current) lada for spares

yep it true, no RHD ones anymore. Those pictures are great, its hard to imagine a Niva without a dent here, a scratch there, wear there, slop there and of course old mud and dirt in every nook and cranny

Thanks for the info Andy - good to know what to look for when one see an ad about a stripped Lada....... Unfortunately private imports (complete vehicles) are heavily taxed in South Africa, but there are still many Ladas with good bodies around. If parts are privately imported, these cars can be restored to perfect condition - at an affordable price. Fortunately import tax on loose spareparts is not as high as tax on complete vehicles - I am quite convinced that complete kits will be heavily taxed as well. I have heard about somebody who tried to import a complete motorcycle as spareparts - it has been stripped overseas, and shipped to South Africa to save on import tax - didn't work........the Tax man insisted on his share. Hi Danie
It is nice to see a factory which is spotlessly clean. I have been in BMW Roslyn and it is not in this class.

Hi Bob
Just a note re you importing a Lada from SA to AUS. Most vehicles from the Transvaal (Gauteng) are virtually rust free. This is a great advantage.

Hi Ari The only sand I ever had it in was the Kalahari. I think mostly Dry sand. It is strange as I assume it has always been in the Transvaal. Any way you seem to always be on Holiday so I am sure you have time to respray it Regards Ronnie

Hey guys, the Lada world guys seem to be punting the Master-sport products. I've already got MS brake pads, and hopefully I'll get money sometime soon to order a gearbox bearing kit. Here's the page with the catalogues on. Very interesting... www.master-sport.de/EN/lada_ladakatalog/

Hey dudes, I decided to dig around a bit and found that LadaWorld (in Denmark) is supplied by Master-Sport in Germany... Their prices are staggering! For instance, the Danes (however pleasant and efficient they are) charge 260kr (= 34euros, R334) for their gearbox bearing set, and ze germans charge 22,73euros, which equals R218,13. That's a decent saving. And the shipping charges will be alright. This is a resource you should think of using- I know I am going to use them (as soon as I have money!). The url for Master-Sport's online shop for Lada spares is www.ms-shop.eu/show-vquery-lada-vwhere-ws-vhow-d Laters peeps.

I do have a rowing boat (a proper, skinny, super sleek and fast one), but no yacht just yet. But it is interesting that you ask Marius, because I'm very interested in learning how to sail, and I've always had a dream of restoring a beautiful old wooden schooner and sailing it around the world. Maybe I'll stop off and get some Lada parts from the jerries on my way back!

Did a lot of sailing with my brother's cat when I was " a little" younger - great fun. Let me know when you get that schooner afloat

Current price in Russia is about R65000, +30% SA import duty, +VAT. I bought 2 Ladas in Russia some years ago before LHD imports were prohibted. And don't be fooled by pictures, Russia is Russia. But I am all for a trip to the factory and a drive through Africa. That is if those deceptively pretty new Nivas make it through Europe.

Hi Wim
Welcome to the forum - I do find your comments very interesting.
I guess the transport cost from Russia has been quite steep ? Do you still own the two Ladas?
I often see an ad at Junkmail where somebody is looking for a left hand drive Lada - sorry for being nosy, but if you placed that ad, I thought more details about the project would be very interesting.....

Danie

Hi Wim Welcome to the Forum. It would be nice to drive from Russia to RSA. Only thing is the overland costs would be more than the cost of the Lada Ronnie

Hi Wim
A warm welcome to the forum. I'm thinking much the same way as you - a trip to Russia to go buy a civil version of the Lada Komdiv and bring her back to SA.
