Now that Ive included a fridge in my camping kit, the poor niva seems to be suffering a bit under the weight. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of fitting uprated springs at the back? Also how does one go about it? Do you just call up the local spring works and ask them to make stiffer springs and they do all the calculations, or do you need to tell them how stiff the springs should be? Thanks

Hi Conrad
I had the same problem a long time ago. I took the springs into Van Zyl`s Spring works in JHB and explained the problem. They made new springs for me and they cured the problem.

Thanks Ronnie.
What was the drive like when it was unladen after fitting the stiffer springs?

Hi Conrad
I have got to be honest, I can`t remember as it was a long time ago. I certainly can`t ever remember having problems with the handling. Ari may be able to answer this question.

Hi Conrad
The cheapest temporary boost for coil springs is to fill them with old tennis balls. Jack up the body of the car to extend coils then force an equal number of tennis balls per side into the inner part of the coil.

Would it only be good for say - one longish journey? Marius

Hi Marius
You may recall the second shape of Opel Kadett that was built in South Africa. It had a massive boot but suffered when owners(like me) used the boot capacity to the full ;D
On my annual holiday to my parents in Northern Zululand (Sordwana and Manzengwenya) I filled the springs with tennis balls and removed them when back home in Knysna. I did this with the same set of balls 8 or 9 to a side for 4 trips of about 3000km each with no adverse affect on the balls.

You also get rubber blocks that look like an X that are for this purpose.

That sounds promising Spikes I will most definitely keep it in mind I have also seen the X shaped rubbers which is also a very good idea - thanks Ari. Marius

Hi guys Here the hunters place big wooden boxes with their hunting dogs at the back of the niva, about 150kg. To solve the problem with the suspension, they add 2-3 cm spacers or stiffer springs or double springs. They install smaller springs eg from motorcycle inside of the standard springs.

thanks guys lots of good advice, Ill try and find a spring works firstly.
I'm not to keen on having a solution that I have to fit and take out all the time, Id prefer something more permanent.
