Hi all,
So I am really contemplating buying a Lada.
The only things that really worry me at the moment are:
How much it would cost to get an air-conditioner installed. (I have heard somewhat conflicting stories as to how much it would cost) Has anyone on this forum had one installed? I am looking at a Lada 1.7i 2002 if that helps.
Rust. Basically everyone I have spoken to says that rust is a problem on Ladas. Rust is a pet hate of mine and it would drive me insane. Is it possible to purchase a Lada and keep it completely rust free.. and if so.. how could one accomplish this? Or is it just a case of you see rust appearing, you get it cut out and resprayed.
Any thoughts/advise would be amazing!
Much thanks.
Damian

shell has a product use to be called tactol, its used by most new car manufacturers and is clearly visible secially on new car underbody and inside doors.....it looks like a thin layer of caramel smells rather unique ass well, nowadays I believe its called Shell Ensis V and its as good as it gets, its a toffee like substance and its expensive ass hell! Its definitly worth every penny and prevents rust 100% in applied areas....use a low pressure long nozzle spray gun for application!

Tectyl 506wd. Not to be applied over rust, just to prevent rust.

Hi Damien
I installed one that was second hand. It worked perfectly when it was split new and it is still working in it`s second Niva. If I remember correctly Ventz was looking at a price of about R6500. I am sure he will respond to your request for a price.

Thanks everyone for their replies. Should I get one I will definitely look at using that Tectyl product.
Ronnie, might I ask how well said aircon works? It might sound like a stupid question but I have read that sometimes aftermarket aircon systems don't work very well and am just curious.

Hi Damien
The inside of the Niva was like an icebox. There is only two manufacturers in SA and I think the one in Durban was the only? one who made them for the Niva. The kits are no longer available but Ventz has stock. I also had a similar kit in a 1400 Nissan LDV and it was like a freezer in the SMALL cab. You will not be disappointed.

Hi Damian There was also an article in the latest Wegry about rust prevention in the Toyota that can be win by subscribing. It's an electronic option...
It may also be in the Drive-Out. Maybe somebody who reads Drive-Out can comment.

Perhaps this was a job done by the dealership in Cape Town but the inside of the door panels and some other areas were treated with Tectyl in our brand new Niva. The underside of all the Nivas I have seen at CMH came with the gray anti-rust coating.
The only real rust issue I have is at the the rear side window on the left. I saw quite a number of Nivas with rust in that area (both side windows) in Cape Town. I think most Nivas with serious rust issues probably came into direct contact with sea water which is a car killer - or simply have been neglected and exposed for long periods to the elements.
