What is it with the motor trade in SA that virtually without exception, all people working in it have absolutely no customer service skills? They just don't give a stuff about their clients and seem to think they are doing you a favour even though you are paying them! I don't think I'm being unreasonable when I expect - the salesman at the local spares shop to stop talking to his friend while I'm standing there waiting for service
- or a panel beater to tell you honestly how long it will take to fix your car instead of promising it in a week but taking a month
- or a mechanic to quote before they just go ahead and repair the car at a cost you may not be able to afford
- or the suppliers who don't have that in stock, so Ill have to check the price with our supplier, who are never to be heard from again
The list goes on and on, and I'm sure you can add many of your own examples to this. What got me thinking about this, was the sms I received from the auto electrician yesterday. It read "alternator ready X Rands incl vat". I get there today and I'm told that I misunderstood the message. They were merely quoting me and want to know if they should go ahead. I didn't even crack an apology when I took out my phone and showed them the message and asked what they understand ready to mean. The sad part is we get so used to it and aren't even surprised any more when we get this type of service. It doesn't help trying a different supplier either, as their buddy down the road has even worse service and you re lucky if they don't turn out to be a rip off artist to boot. So you might as well stick with the ones that at least do a decent job even if they treat you like you're a dog turd. PS thanks for listening to me rant ;D

Hi Conrad
I know how you feel. When I went to Lada Centurion to hopefully discuss my gripes I sat there while they were constantly on the phone and I had 2 dogs slavering all over me. After 10 minutes of this I decided to leave before I said something I would have regretted. By the way, Centurion was 700kms away from where I lived on the South coast, and they were one of the reasons for the journey. I always thought customers were king, but I was wrong.

I only hear good things about LADA centurion...this is very promising for a guy whom just bought one and living in pta... THIS IS WORRYING...towards the lada comunity! In reality I have heard not a single good thing about Jan, and just because of that i'll make my point by importing every part required by my LADA and not support him. Screw this local monopoly shit, got abused enough by other manufacturers and will not allow a private guy with a few stripped LADAS make me do the rain dance for parts! That comrades I WILL NOT DO,ILL SUPPORT MOTHER RUSSIA! ;D

Jan @ centurion lada is not all bad. But u have to fight off his gat sniffing dogs then u have to wait for service and he will help u nicely. But he charges alot and acts like he owns all the ladas on the road. If u go there with mods on your car like me he does not want to help u! But he has helped me sort out some problems on my niva and he knows his stuff.

Just a general note on the Auto Trade in South Africa: Check if the "dealer" is RMI (Retail Motor Industries) registered. This is the Automotive Self Regulatory body. I try to only make use of affiliated members. You can read more about RMI at www.rmi.org.zaSpikes

Hi Allen
If you go to his web site it tells you when they stopped importing Lada`s he switched from selling them to repairing them. That is about all I know or want to know about him. When I give someone an order for a rebuilt Niva and there is a specification listing what will be done, and I then find a list of things that have not been done (and this includes parts that should be replaced) I get very angry. One item can slip through but when it develops into a list I then consider the supplier a thief. To put this into the correct perspective The cost was R60000.

Hi Ronnie
I heard that this guy does stuff like this. Like i have said previously it is very sad to me that people do other people in just for money.
He and his wife told me when i went to buy the wheel bearings(first and only time there) that when you buy a Niva you at least have to spend R15000-R20000 to get it on standard(that with out even seeing my Niva, i was there with my other car). They insisted i must bring my Niva to them so that they can go through it but i very quickly made it very clear to them that i work on my own Niva, but they insisted that they will go with me through it. But luckily i had seen my Niva friends on the forums comments of him.
Regards, Allen

Hi Allen
If he could get 15 to 20 thousand from everyone buying a Niva he would be rich. I would never have used him but my wife bought the (rebuilt) Niva from him as a present for me. The easiest way is to import your spares and do all your own work. Then if something is wrong you can only blame yourself. Fortunately, the Niva is a very simple vehicle and even for someone who does not know much they can easily learn with help from the forum.

That is so true, he needs to work on 2/3 a month and he can earn a very good salary at that price.
It is a very simple vehicle to work on, 1 of the easiest. The Russian's don't like to battle.

This is the main reason i try not to take my niva to a mechanic half of them round here havent got a clue. The only mechanic i trust is the one that MOT'S my niva every year and he loves it when i roll upwith it.He even lent me his socket and bar when my Dad changed my timing chain to save me buying the socket very good man..

you can all be your own dealership in parts as long as you have a pc, internet and credit card..I did a complete turbo build with only imported parts... really sick and tired of local people especially those with the mentality of Jan...
