H there to all....I am 26 year old lawyer whom likes to get greasy hands!
I thought I'd rather register instead of looking at all your posts and not being able to ask how and why...
I bought a lada niva sidekick for a fair price and I have a feeling I might get bashed for this but long since reached the point where I care about BS like that....
I come from a long line of 4x4's (unimogs, safris, hiluxes, isuzus, prados, pajeros)and have a fair but of building rebuilding them...mostly land cruiser pick ups..fixed them from scratch.
I am a very big fan of Japanese reliability...but like the nivas idea of durability...and since being from SA i thought why not ad a bit of SA ingenuity...
I am currently busy finishing my bar exam but as from next weekend Ill start doing the following..
I will be completely deconstructing the niva to a rolling chassis...then will be making a Mazda BP4 (mazda mx5 1.8l doch 107kw) and rear wheel drive gear box fit and lining up the transfer with it....I bought an extra one since I have 270hp turbod version in the garage for spares sake..
Of to paint, that I Will leave as surprise for the folks on here and then assembly but reckon the colour scheme would make it one of the nicest nivas in pta hopefully...
Finishing touches will include neat set of jimny mags, roof rack, set of light forces i have lying around, rear spare wheel fitment and maybe AC but not so sure yet...covering the entire interior with canvas incl the seats, door panels and roof lining..will be going with go tech pro management for the computer side of motor, and like the idea of having electric windows since I am all ready rebuilding the door panels...
My aim is to have A CHEAP, RELIABLE 4X4 capable of cruising 130kph with no need to go back to fourth on uphill or struggling to tow my quad or bass boat....I DONT WANT TO RACE IT, JUST LIKE TO MAINTAIN A STEADY CRUISE SPEED!
Safe driving and will post progress as from next weekend...cheers and have a good one!

Hi Spikes.. Actuslly not completely legal still at the dangerous part where i think I know something about law..... Brakes shoes and pads will be kept stock but since I have a mountain of cruiser spares at my disposal and mainly quality Aisin parts was thinking of getting a cruiser booster in there...with some made up brake lines to go with it..... Like I said..not going to race it or investigate the recorded top speed before the differential cease...would just like enough grunt to not get out and push up a hill..... The project i aim to finish in November so that it wil endure a maidin voyage to Sodwana Bay in December... I very much appreciate the atmosphere on here... leke manne hou dit so! GONE FISHIN ;D

Hi. Good to see new members in PTA. I am also planing a conversion and your mazda sounds like a plan. Before u buy your gotech ecu just look at Spitronics too. I find gotech is less user friendly and more for track use. Regards Ruan

Hi ruan and thanks for the input... I run a go tech on similar engine in my mx 5 turbo and although I dont tune it myself I really cant complain on the go tech or tune....I get good mph due to efficient tune and air fuel ratios during cruise and good thump during WOT, so i reckon this would be rather easy tune for the same guy? But can only dream of the finished project and its vtec mode at 4500 rpm...I think that just might pursaude the bass boat up and over the hill.... Afraid of running too high rpm on the diff though so think I will set limiter between 5500 and 6000? max power on engine is at 6300....but dont want to chance the lada diff or transfer at that...engine will be more than capable at low rpm too provide sufficient hp to have a pleasant drive....also noticed that ladas top speed was 140kph with stock motor, so have no need to exceed that in top gear and replacement powerplant.... Like I said no race car(allready built ) just nice too drive suv capable of towing quad or small bass boat!

Spitronics has features like full split fueling and fuel cut off that stops fuel (completly) if u take your foot off the pedal. Once the engine goes under 1000 rpm or so it will fuel again. Gotech pro x is a good ecu i think it may also do all these things. Do u know if your gearbox is short enough? I cant find a cheap short box so i dont have to move the tc.

Ruan look at a Merc 123 or 124 box. They are also very strong.

The 124 does. The 202 is also fairly short.

Gearbox is rather short but no measurements as of yet...If I have to move the TC then so be it... If its worth doing its worth overdoing! ;D Braced myself for an extensive modifying experience.... WIES BANG?

I dont like standing projects...the niva wil run come november...painted motor in and running like a roadrunner! Attachments:

yip if you liked that check this one I built not local spec... Imported from ausie with a 4,5 liter d4d turbo diesel V8 putting down 151kw and 540NM to the wheels....this could pull SA around on the map with that torque...that was nice...was too expensive too keep and was sold to a mine owner in Middelburg... Ive redone and fixed a bucket load from the old hoenderhokke to the V8 common rails...love cruisers as wel...still have one though.. Attachments:

theyve been saying that for the past four years....
money talks and bllshit walks...no market here for that vechile a new singlecab will put you back just under 600K?
My dad imports them for a living from Ausie, i know cruisers and prices...and you wanna be wearing some kind of crash helmet whenever you shop for parts...new door(no pirate available) will set you back 12K...
enjoy the NIVAS comrades...
