I am looking at a 1996 W202 c180 Merc. 220 000km. FSH.
Does anyone have some experience with them? Cost of spares is not really a problem as I know where to find parts cheap. I have worked on them and find them fairly easy and enjoyable to work on.

Charles,
My experience with Merc's has been good.
Buy it if the price is right and the mechanical bits are OK.
Regards Vincent

Charles, I dont see a problem with it as long as it is mechanically still sound, which it sounds like it is due to the FSH.
Why is the current owner selling it? And dont let Maddy find out!

Hi Charles, Bought our C180 in Oct last year for R39000.00 with 4 new tyres FSH and 186698 km on the clock. It is a heavy car for a 1800 motor but the twin cam motor loves to rev. As Jan said it lacks torque at low revs. Cost to maintain is fairly low. Shocks (gabriels)cost 2200 for 4. Suspension bushes all round 600 + 2 hrs labour Clutch slave cylinder 1564 but SAWarrenties paid 1486 of that Services spares are FREELY available. Body and interior spares as are complete engines/gearboxes/diff/steering are available on the secondhand market at about 30% of new I am quite happy with our purchase. it took awhile to adapt to is high torque band> Km reading now at 199167
hope this helps.

I only saw this thread now. My wife was driving our C220 for 6 trouble free years - but the Head Gasket has blown at about 190 000 kms. Head Gasket has been replaced , and Head professionally checked at about R12 000.00, but for some or other reason the engine kept on running too hot.
Got worried, was not prepared to spend another R12000 , and got rid of the car.
Very nice cars actually.
