Hi Lada fans.
I have a 1600 Niva that still runs on the old points and condensers. Is there anybody that have done or know about a upgrade that could be fitted to convert to electronic ignition?
I know of a module that can be fitted inside the dizzy but has not been able to find a distributer for these units.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Hein I do not have any experience in this regard, but apparently an electronic ignition from a later model Lada Will fit. You could have a look at this info on Baxter's website : www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/Electronic_Distributor_Swap.docHopefully you will be able to find an electronic ignition from a stripped engine, the two agents, or you could import one directly from Russia. Hope this will help. Regards Danie

A few years ago a guy showed me that you only need to fit a small module where the points used to be. The wiring and coil stays the same. But it is to long ago and I can not remember where to get it. I saw there is some dizzy pro's in the CAR magazine, i will contact them to see if they can help.

Hi Hein
If you can't find the module you are looking for, perhaps I could help.
I've got a spare electronic distributor lying in my garage, but unfortunately the distributor cap is cracked. I bought a cap from Centurion Lada before, so I guess they should have stock.
The distributor has been removed from my spare engine, and I have never used it before - so I can't say whether it still works or not. There is no play on the shaft though.
If you are interested - I will let it go for R150.00 (as is), which includes postal fees.
Regards
Danie
P.S. I don't think your distributor cap will fit.

Hi Danie Thanks for the offer. Please hold onto that distributor for me as I am calculating what the total cost will be since i will have to replace cap, coil and HT leads. I will also have to get the wiring and CDI. I am on the project so I will let you know in a few days. P.S Mike. I found a module but think it will cost more than R1000 for this small modification. www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspx I found the advert in a 2006 CAR and the dealers where "Offshore Marine International" 0217861007. I have not checked if they still exist, but will do so in the morning. Regards Hein

Hi Danie. Is there any way that you still have that dizzy from a 1700? My project at the moment is carb and dizzy. Also where is the best place to post some pics and news of the work i did on the Lada?

Hi Hein
Yes, the distributer is still available. Since my initial post I have removed the cap and discovered that some of the components look slightly rusted. I will take a pic later, then you van decide whether you want it or not. You will just have to pay the postal fee - I cant charge a fee for the distributor because I haven't used it, and I do not know whether it would still work properly........
Please feel free to start a new thread under the "General" section, in order to send some news and pics - it's always nice to see what work has been done by other members.
Regards
Danie

Hi Hein This is a pic of the distributor: By having a closer look, the rust is not as bad as I thought - just looks like slight surface rust, and should be easy to clean. There is no play on the shaft, and as mentioned before, the cap has a few cracks and needs to be replaced. Regards Danie

Thanks Danie
It still looks good, i'm sure with some TLC it will be 100% again.
I have found the wiring diagram and will use a vw module that i should have and coil from spares shop.

Hi Hein
Do you prefer Postnet or the Post Office ?
Postnet might be more expensive, but might be faster.

Hi Danie
Thats not a surprise, local postage is so corrupt. Makes you wonder how one manages to import pars of about 2kg from USA for R200 shipping.
Appreciate your help.

Hi Hein The Post Office quoted as follows: Ordinary post (5 -6 days delivery): R34.25 Speed Post (1 - 2 working days delivery) R103.32 Insurance (optional) : 2 % of the value of item. I would go for Ordinary post, insure the item for about R1000.00 (or more)...........then start crossing fingers that the item get lost within 5 or 6 days.......... Please send me a PM regarding your decision. Regards Danie

Hi guys
I must admit Postnet is crazy - AND I never had any problems with the Post Office - provided that you insure the parcel. You can even insure for the minimum (R100) - just as long as you have a tracking number you are fine.
You can even track the parcel on the internet with your tracking number.
Regards Marius

Hi Danie
Thanks for sending the parcel. I'm very exited to get started.
I went to visit the previous owner of my Lada this weekend and he had nothing good to say and suggested that it must cost me a fortune to keep it going. When I told him that I have only send the Lada for repairs when I had it sprayed and the exhaust made, he was not impressed. But then again he is a accounting teacher that lives on a farm. Nothing against teachers but I have never known a technical minded school teacher.
Regards
Hein
