Hi Ari,
My guess is that if you have preventative maintenance done on the Niva that no more work needs to be done than on any other vehicle of the same type.
My wife's Mini requires a service every 30 000 kilometres, so I think that if the normal things are done as recommended in the service manual every 10 000 kilometres should be adequate for the Niva. An example is the timing chain; it should last very long if regularly adjusted, but will fail well early if not adjusted. (there is a mod on the forum that makes it almost unnecessary to fiddle with the timing chain).
The quality of the parts and the quality of assembly of the Niva is up there with the best, so why will it require more work than a Toyota, I do not know.
My view is that because we do not have a dealer network cowboys work on the Nivas and do not do the basics, and not do it right. My general advice is to team up with a reputable service centre, give him the service schedule, and if wise not one in the wider Centurion area, if you can help. I mean, how difficult is it to change oil, filters, antifreeze, brake shoes, the odd rubber item, grease the few points, check the wheel bearings, timing, air-fuel mixture, vee-belt and charging/electrical system if you are a service station? But do not do it and even a Merc diesel will fail in no time!
Regards,
Fanus

I don't have to do alot of work on my Niva except some small niggles that I have to sort out, but I think most of that is just because of previous owners negligence.

in general my Niva don't need that much of attention. Most work sits in the mods
and offcourse, if you take it offroading on regular bases, it needs its check-ups

Charles I can sympathise.
I knew it was bad when Ventz told me that it was time to stop fixing my car because its costing me too much money. In fact my car may have spent more time with him than it has with me since I bought it.
Here's hoping that we can all can stop working on our cars and just enjoy driving them

Conrad, you well have 2 months of not working on your car, as Ventz is going overseas for 2 months on Saturday, be that for better or worse only time will tell.

Not likely! It just means that Ventz doesn't have to work on it for 2 months.

Here's hoping that we can all can stop working on our cars and just enjoy driving them Conrad, if your Lada's body is in good condition, there should be no reason to stop working on the car. But you should rather try working on the car yourself. Jan Pretorius also once told me that he usually scrap Ladas which are in similar condition like mine. At the time I regarded Jan's comment as completely useless, I did almost all repairs myself, imported my own spares, and managed to keep the Lada mobile for (another) about 55 000 kms at an affordable price ! Hi, Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, Ventz wasn't implying that the car is beyond repair, in fact there are few mechanical parts left that haven't been repaired or replaced. He was just joking about the number of repairs.
With regards to fixing the car myself, I wish I could. Sadly because its a daily driver, I can't afford to park it off for a month while I wait for spares from pavel. I do as many of the repairs myself as I can, but often it is much quicker and easier to take it in to be repaired.

He was just joking about the number of repairs. Maybe Jan was also kidding when he told me that he usually scrap Ladas which are in similar condition than mine, and maybe I have been too stupid to realize that he was actually kidding ....... . Anyway, to my understanding Ventz once did not seem to be sure about any need for modifications to my Lada, because (to my understanding) he reckoned that it has been in good condition, and did not need any modifications . Yes I agree he does take a very strong stance on keeping the cars original and not modifying them.
Sorry charles it seems I managed to get horribly off topic, but the answer is that both ventz and i work on the car almost every week.

I now only do maintenance work on Toadwort.
As I type this I have dirty hands as I was busy with the tappets. Just rear diff oil to be changed and its service is complete.
I check engine oil level every day as I do mega km's and its not worth the risk.

Famous last words.
I had to open the tappet cover again today as I did a poor job of the valve clearance setting.

You know, I'm thinking. . . . (maybe I shouldn't ;D) Yes we do work on our Nivas quite often. And it is frustrating at times. From what I have learned, that is part of all the affordable fun. I am starting to think that the guys who enjoy their Nivas most are the ones not driving it due to being broken down but who loves the idea of driving it some day like very rof ne (Referring to the swedish lada niva advert on youtube, funny one! And Vincent on his best of days). So they working on it and fixing it etc. I take myself, my first Niva was the only one I had the opportunity to go driving a bit off road with. Fanus you will probably remember the green Niva on its belly, stuck I mean . . . And still, I love a Niva, I enjoy the friendships and like the guys I have met during this time, I love my new Niva, even though it has been standing for about 6months and I haven't had the opportunity to drive it around or go off roading (but I will hopefully very soon). I still love working on it whilst listening to our Niva song. KingRiaan is probably thinking now, "if only my Niva had boobs." lol ;D So here is a 'cheerz' (beers in hand, Jan) to all of you!

Dear All Good morning
Started yesterday dismantling the Front Suspension and Removing the GB on our Lada. Any body with an idea to remove the Lower Balljoints - seems stuck. Not even a 2KG hammer can budge.
Waiting on the parts ordered. Still @ work, but work on the Car in the evenings when I get Home Will also open the GB and see if there's anything broken b4 taking it to Gearbox Centre.
Regards Stephen
