I heard on the news today that 'the government' is going to introduce MOTs for vehicles over 10 years old. Not a problem if you maintain your Ladas....but they also said that certain second hand parts can not be used on vehicles ? What will happen to all of the scrap yards, second hand car spares breakers and Lada owners who rely on such 'pieces' to keep our cars running safely on SA roads......unlike the Taxi Industry who don't give a hoot about the condition of their (so called) vehicles. Perhaps I shouldn't worry as I fully expect that the implementation date of 2013 will never happen and by the time it does happen.....I will most probably have joined Ronnie in the UK. Anybody want to buy a LADA ....only one carefull owner :-) ? Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

Ha ha that will be great if they can introduce MOTs here. But I doubt if they ever will. My Lada passed roadworthy yesterday Ari

Hi Well done Ari!! I read the piece on the Internet as well. It will still be quite sometime before it comes into reality
The section about scrapped vehicles is aimed at "rebuilders" who buy up scrapped wrecks and cobble together a "vehicle" that is then sold as a second hand car.
I do not see it affecting second hand spares. UK has had the MOT for quite sometime and second-hand spares dealers are still thriving

Hi Spikes,
The day I panic about MOTS will be the same day I start to worry about moths in the bushveld. It is not going to affect us, and in the odd case it may affect one or other mod on my Niva I will just bribe the testing station. I mean, how many trucks have you seen at a testing station during the past +- 10 years? I drive past quite a few for years now (certified for trucks) and never see a truck there. It may be they get checked thoroughly in the neighbouring states and I will not notice, because I do not go there. It may even be that the Chinas now also export automatic roadworthies, but I am not sure.
Just imagine the war veterans give the nod of approval to ban parts from China. Shirbit! All the new Land Cruisers will have to park, because their engines are fully assembled in China. Obviously the OEM spares distributed by Toyota Robbers in Sandton will then have to come from the other BRICS partner in Brasilia! He, he, this circus gets quite interesting now.
I wonder if it ever occurred to anyone that each and every car or truck must be roadworthied now and if this was done, that the chicken sheds this new law is apparently aimed at, would have been failed/removed from the roads by now with the masses of spietkops that can order the odd dodgy vehicle to a testing station in any case. Voila! The law abiding citizen is spared the trouble to take a few hours off from work to take his vehicle, still under motor-plan, to a testing station. Pardon, phoning a trusted testing station to deliver his roadworthy! I do not know why this sounds like a toll-gate repeat!
Regards,
Fanus

It should be interesting to see them test all cars older than 10 years because that's the majority of vehicles on our roads. On the positive side, maybe opening a vehicle test facility in your area might not be such a bad business oppertunity.
