Hi all. I know it is best to order pistons from pavel but do u get local pistons. And can u get some with better cr ratio? Maybe some flat top ones? Even if i have to machine the valve grooves myself. Thanks Ruan

Hi Ruan
I would rather order oversize pistons from Pavel.
My Lada has got oversize pistons, and I managed to find compression, as well as oil rings locally. The pistons had to be machined to make the oil rings fit though.
Machining the pistons is a highly specialized job - if you do have the confidence to try that, it should work - otherwise rather get a set of oversize pistons and rings from Pavel.
I must admit, if I new about Pavel at the time when I was looking for local rings for my oversize pistons, I would rather order oversize rings from Pavel.

Ari's Niva had isuzu pistons in that was machined shorter. Im sure you will be able to match it. I somewhere heardthat there is toyota pistons that will fit.

Very interesting.
Ruan, just remember, when you do machine Isuzu (or whatever) pistons, you will have to make 100% sure that the weight on all 4 pistons needs to be exactly the same .
If you do have access to a very accurate scale, it should work.

Thanks. Yes i have a place thet can machine the pistons. But i wil explore the pavel route first. Just wonderd if a bit higher compresion pistons can be fitted. The lada pistons look like turbo pistons with that deep dish in it. Ruan

Golf pistons are 82.6. Same as 2.6 combi pistons.

Ruan, if the idea is getting a better compression ratio, why not shave the head? I take 1,2 mm of a 1700 head without other adjustments. Power will be a bit better, but torque is A LOT better on all revs. If you want i can pm you an URL from a youtube. You can see there a race between some Niva's of our club. You will see that a 1600 with 1700 carb engine with shaved head is BY FAR the fastest Niva there. I can not put the URL here on the forum because what we did there was not exactly legal. We raced on an abandoned military runway.
One thing to bear in mind: an ordonary ignition with contact points as in a 1600 WILL NOT work any more with this compression ratio.

Very interesting Jan. Does one have to fit a adjustable cam gear to get the cam timing correct again, or is enough to be able to move it one tooth?

Danie Sorry, it has been a while since the mod. and installation has been done to my Lada's pistons - I do see so many pistons at work that I probable got a bit insane . The oversize pistons on my Lada are also dished - like the ones Pavel are selling : Danie.

Seeing this it is just more reason/motivation to add some boost to a Niva engine.

For what it's worth - this is a pic of the mod. to my Lada's pistons. A set of Mahle rings has been installed, and the piston groove for the oil rings had to be machines wider, as well as deeper to make it fit properly: Danie

I am not going to recon my engine now. It has no oil on the pistons and it does not breath to bad. Going to put everything back and drive it until it smokes. I wil get all the parts so long as i think it may be a costly game.

Hi Ruan My work entails quality control, and co designing of new products. In general, I am just running around like an idiot - to make the Bosses' ideas work in real life . Danie
