Hi Guys I have been searching for more than a month and I have finally found a Niva. I have bought a Niva from one of the members, smuller. It is in pretty decent shape but following the discussion on these threads the Niva is never 100%. I have no experience at all in maintaing a car but I bought the Niva to change this. The Niva's breaks where not to good, so this weekend I bought some new front pads and replaced them, 100% percent improvent, this was actually pretty easy. I now have some confidence and will start tackling all these small issues one at a time. Wayne P.S I know that if I need help the guys on the forum are always keen. Attachments:

Welcome Wayne, me and you are in a similar boat. AI also don't know much about cars but am learning a lot with the Niva, and the people on this forum is wonderful, never shy in providing technical knowledge.

Hi Wayne Congrats on your new purchase I've said it many times but the Niva is the best teacher ever! If you are looking for new 16" tyres (standard 175/80R16 size) you can PM me for all the details. The Nankangs sells at R880 VAT included a piece. Enjoy! Marius

Hi Marius
I will definately be doing that in the near future, I would like to get a set for the standard rim and then maybe get a sidekick mag with some road tyres.

Ok, so my Niva has a few issues, I guess that is why I bought it.
Firstly the knob controlling the heater seems to be stuck, is there any quick fix for this? Is this also the reason that hot air from the engine enters the car?
The next problem is that the clutch take very low(on the floor) and looses pressure then you have to pump the pedal. Should I try to reset the height of the pedal and then bleed or is it the slave cylender?

Hi Wayne Most likely the valve controlling the flow of water to the heater is stuck in the open position. The valve is located inside the cabin against the firewall next to the heater box. Working it slowly with Q20 applied and using a visegrip got mine loose. Be careful, the shaft may snap if badly corroded.
For the clutch I'd suggest bleeding all fluid out, you can get a lot out of the reservoir with a syringe, refill and then bleed air out. If it sill loses pressure the master cylinder and /or slave cylinder will probably be have to replaced.
Low clutch release is usually indicative of a worn clutch friction plate

Morning guys, so todays challange is, what is the trick to opening the boot of a 1.7 (cable inside passenger side) if you are on your own, this morning I hade to get in the back and push the door from the inside while pulling the lever. Do I need more powerful gas lifts or is this a 2 man job?

Hi Wayne, The tailgate should remain in the upright position once opened if the gas lifters on each side are ok.......but be careful as they do 'run out of steam' after a while and after getting fed up with the wretched thing dropping down on my head a few times...and that hurts....I invested in a broomstale cut to size to hold the tail gate open. This is especially needed in the winter as the gas pressure in the lifters was rubbish in the cold weather. I'm going to get a new set of lifters later this week from Midas... ie as soon as finances permit. Regards and best wishes, Keith and CERATOTH.

Yes. Just like the bonnet. The spring in the catch might also be broken and that is why it is not bushing it out.

Yes I also thought it was a spring of some sort as the gas lifts seem to be working well, I will have a closer look , post a pic or two if I get stuck. Will probably spend the weekend doing this as I am about to start getting the tools and spares together to do my first major service, all the oils, air filter, oil filter, plugs etc.

When I bought mine it had the high tech version of a broom stick.
The previous owner had drilled a hole through the silver arm on the strut, so that you could put a nail through it and hold the boot open.
I got tired of fumbling in the dark, dropping the nail and generally stuffing around trying to find the hole while holding the boot lid open with one hand, and bought a set of struts!

Hi Conrad,
Yes new struts is the trick (Gabriel makes a strut that fits and work well). Another trick that also worked for me is to lift the lid fast and hold it up for a few seconds. If it does not stay up, I lower it again fast, lift it fast and hold it at the top for a few seconds again. Normally It stays on top then. I do not really know why this work for me, but it may be because of the sealing arrangement in the strut that needs some priming/lubrication or heat that make the seals work better after being in the closed position for so long without movement.
Regards,
Fanus

Hi Wayne,
The heater valve is one of the problem things in the Niva. It is quite cheap new from Pavel in the Ukraine. My guess why it gives problems is that the cooling system is not maintained properly. For example; anti freeze that is not changed frequently changes to a mild acid. So, if the heater valve is not moved often it will get stuck due to corrosion.
Regards,
Fanus

Hi Fanus
I will definately be going the Pavel route and order the valve, but to make it cost effective I will be doing it in a month or two when I can afford to order a few more spare to make the shipping cost effective. In the interm I will have a look at the golf 1 valve and see if I could do a tempory mod. If there is antone in the Cape Town area doing an order from Pavel would it be possible to order a couple of extra spares?
