Hi Guys. Haven't had much of chance to check out the forum yet but thought I would introduce myself first. Reason I joined was to find out more about the Lada, I am thinking about buying a small 4x4 to have fun with on the weekends (and daily driver) and the Lada came up as one of the options. I am going to do some reading on the forum and see if the Lada is the option for me. Maybe some of you can convince me to buy one......... Cheers

Jo! That was quick!! Welcome Bazzar. You will find a NIVA. Patience and a lot of footwork is the key. Head over to www.olx.co.za to see a selection of what is on offer at the moment. If you are prepared to and can work on the NIVA you can get good deals fairly cheap. They are really basic vehicles to work on. Happy hunting

Ha Ha, yeah Well I am keen for a Niva, but which one must I look for? Which is the best model/motor? I know very little about the Lada, but believe that they are very reliable and easy to fix if something goes wrong.

There are only 2 options, carb or TBI, both are 1,700L, 4 cylinder.

Hi bazzar and welcome.
Ari you forgot the 1600, there is at least one on OLX.
I would personally go for a 1700 carb. Happy hunting

Hi,
TBI is the acronym for the fuel injected models. There will no doubt follow a debate now over which is better. So ill leave comments on that to those who are more knowledgeable.
With regards to the 1600 model, it is an older model which has a older dash layout, smaller capacity engine and a smaller boot lid to the 1700 (you'll understand what I mean if you look at a picture).
A lot of people however prefer the look of the 1600 as it is more of a classic.

Hi In total about only about 25% of the total number of NIVAs imported RSA were TBI (throttle Body Injection). That is roughly 370 odd. It is also a petrol model. To my knowledge no diesel models were imported. As for classic NIVAs in RSA,. the two 4 door versions and the one Factory racing/rally version must rate as the top contenders.

TBI actually stands for Throttle Body Injection and is a single point injection directly into the throttle body.
