Hi,
I drive a Lada Niva 1.7 Carb 1996 model pulled through the previous owners rear-end, so fixed most of the issues, just want to check on the performance. Is she doing what she is suppose to be doing or can I get some more out of her.
On a 80km drive - uphills, downhills and straight (Gauteng roads) I get about 10km per liter.
Avg Speed is between 80 and 90km/h foot on the floor the whole time.
Top speed I got from her - downhill was 128km/h
Best handling top speed (rattling, being able to make out what is happening in the rear view mirror) - between 103 and 108km/h.
Avg speed against a long uphill - 65 to 75km/h
The best gear ratio I've determined is changing on 3500 revs all gears.
So is this about right or should it be better?

top speed is to low. it should go at least 120 km/h on flat road

Most sounds right. top speed should be higher.
What size tyres do you have??
3500rpm is where the power is

Sounds like mine. Top speed is a bit low. I can do 140km/h on level ground.

Hi Ari.
The tires I have is the A/T's ordered via the club.
Thanks for all the feedback. Might be time to change the sparkplugs and airfilter. Hopefully that will help.
Cheers.

The title of this thread is a lie! Under-performance or lack of performance possibly, but very little by the way of performance I think a whether you have 15" or 16" wheels fitted also makes a major difference to the performance. I have 16" wheels and there is no chance I will ever see 140 on a level road, perhaps down a mineshaft, but definitely not on the road

Hi Conrad
I have used both 16" and 15" and there is no difference 140kmh with both.

Charles and Ronnie: is this on the speedometer or on GPS? my son's 17i MPI has a top of +-130 on GPS, and that's just about what a MPI can do. On the speedometer that's +-140

ladanivabelgium that a good point. My speed readings is according to GPS readings as my speedometer doesn't work. I have tested the GPS reading against my Honda's speedometer and they are basically the same.
For those of you with mobile phones that has GPS capabilities and is looking for a good GPS product for your mobile phone, I recommend downloading Garmap for Mobile. It is an excellent product and it is cheap.

The rim size makes no difference, its the outer diameter of the tyre. I have 15" s but my tyres are bigger than the standard 16" as measured on the outside of the tyre. Bigger tyres do take some of the power away.
Ithink Jan is right, its the GPS and speedo reading difference.

Ari is quite correct. The OD on the standard 15" and 16" tyres are virtually the same - if not exactly the same. Once you start messing with the OD you should get different speedo readings.
The car should easily do 120 on a level road @ 3500 RPM, but it takes time to get there.

Hi Jan
On my last Niva the speedo and GPS were almost identical at 120 kph. Can`t remember what the GPS was showing at 140.

Hi All
If my memory is correct the Factory lists the top speed as 137 kph

My speedo is also exactly the same as the gps. I can do 140km/h but dont like to do it for long.

Thanks,I didn't know that. I always assumed the outside diameter of the tires would be different seeing as the rim size was different.
I have also compared mine to the gps and at 120 the speedo is pretty much spot on.
Seems like mine is a little underpowered as I cant remember ever seeing more than about 125.

Hi Grimwolf I wouldn't be worried about the Lada's "performance"- there are quite a number of factors which could contribute to a "lack"of performance on any given car. Back in 1974 a friend of mine and myself have bought two brand new VW Beetles - he has bought his Beetle 5 days before I have bought mine. In short, both cars have been serviced by the same dealer - but there has been a definate difference in performance between the two cars. My friend's Beetle could reach a higher speed in 3rd gear, than the speed which my Beetle could reach in 4 th gear ! Altitude, as well as weather conditions also play a role on any given engine's performance, on any given day: www.land-and-sea.com/dyno-tech-talk/corrected-horsepower.htmDanie

When last was the car serviced and tuned? Charles Charles..... tell all what you think ;D......about valves, ignition timing, spark plugs, air filter.....etc...etc. I said that...."I have difficulty in English". ;D

Haha.
Blocked air/fuel filter. Old spark plugs. Incorrect ignition timing, Carb not set properly. Carb not opening fully on full throttle. Any of the above.

Hi Grimmwolf,
Yo, it is a weird name that! I am actually brave to write to you (I scare easily in the dark). Here we go!
Your Niva is too slow. You will have to fix it. Simple as that.
Marius is right some identical cars are faster than others, but I have good news for you! Even if you received the slower one from the factory yours can still be the fastest! Just tune it better than the manufacturers spec. (This even applies to the most recent and modern cars). Unfortunately there are not many tuners that can do (and want to do) carburettor tuning, but there are some left. If the tuning is done properly with a dyno you basically never have to tune the vehicle again (unless you move permanently to the coast with a carb engine). Hows that!
With a dyno you tune an engine untill it makes the most power (which may involve playing with the yets in your case). An engine is the most economical when it makes the most power. What more do you want; power with economy (and the engine may even last longer)?
Regards,
Fanus

i would start with the most obvious: have your compression checked. If that is ok, you can go from there. If it's not ok, correct the valve gaps. If then, it's not ok, strip the engine. If you don't have a compression tester, you can, with the engine running, remove the ignition cables one by one. The engine should drop in revs. Be carefully: when it bites you, it hurts! If the compression is good:
- spark plugs, ignition cables, distributor cap and rotor - air cleaner - ignition timing - check for play on the distributor axle - carburettor tuning (throttle valve opens al the way?) - check the exhaust, strip it down if necessary, it may be clogged preventing high revs in high gears - check for vacuum leaks - check very carefully the chain timing, it could be 1 tooth of

www.lada.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=65033&highlight=#65033Now the capacitors are 0,44μF/1Kv, (2Χ 0,22μF/1Κv parallel) So we have a longer duration spark .........and the result is fuel economy about 1 lit\100 km, more torque at lower rpm and power, and fewer exhaust emission For the Niva which have electronic ignition with contactless distributor ...on my Niva

Interesting. Using the coil packs will be expensive.
More info on the capacitor please.

Charles......I added the capacitor (0.33 μF \ 600-1000 V) about 6 months before and work perfect.
