Hi everyone.
The 5th gear on my lada went a few years ago, despite my best attempts to build up the selectors again to keep it from jumping out. Recently my reverse gear has started to jump out and now it can't take any drive at all. Despite the problems with the bell housing that a new gearbox would cause I looked anyway.
To my surprise I found a Toyota 7a engine with the twin cam head from the 4a-ge on (I now call it the 7a-ge, although that doesn't strictly exist) at a very reasonable price. The owner did a RWD mod to a toyota T50 gearbox, and it came complete with a modified bell housing, injectors, ECU etc.
This was too much to resist so I am currently busy installing it in my Lada. It will take some time, but I will take photos and report on how it goes. Just in case anyone is interested.
Ps. If it is a success, I will probably be selling the standard gearbox and fiat 1700 that the 2121 niva came out with. So If anyone is interested in spare parts, let me know!
cheers -Theo

Hi Theo
I am interested in the gearbox. Sounds like a fantastic conversion! Cant wait to see pics. Are you keeping it 4wd?

Hi Charles
I definitely intend to yes, according to my measurements I should be able to fit the entire assembly in front of the transfer case if I sacrifice the mechanical fan and only put 2 electrical fans in front of the radiator. The engine/gearbox assembly is only 100mm longer than the Lada's, however the gearbox is much longer so the bell housing is closer to the front. The biggest problem in this regard is that I will have to reroute the steering rod. So wish me luck.
Ok as I mentioned I will definitely sell it, but only once the conversion is complete, this will hopefully be by the end of July or early August. But thanks for the interest and I will definitely keep you posted.
cheers

Danie I knew you would comment. I think you enjoy conversions as much as I do.

Yea, I always find modifications extremely interesting - specially when a good idea works out well . There are many, many people with great skills, and an open mind out there... Danie

Yes many wil not like it. I have seen a conversion can go two ways. If u work all the problems out and u have the skills to do it your self it is worth it in the end.
