Hi all
When I drive it feels as if there is a pressure build up, a whole lot of black smoke, fart and then power again. The following has been checked - the timing, new spark plugs have been put in, cleaned out fuel tank. I need to check the CO (Niva 1.7i). There are 3 nozzles and I am not sure which one to use to check the CO. Can someone please advise me on this issue.
DO NOT say look at the manual because that doesnt say which nozzle either...too many people have suggested this and not one can find it there themselves. DO NOT say speak to ABC because they dont answer their messages.
Regards Gatvol

Hi Maddy
I do not have any knowledge about CO tests, but as you probably know, black smoke on a petrol engine means only one thing - unburnt fuel.
For a start , you will have to have a good look at the condition of the Lada's engine oil. If the fuel does not burn properly, the fuel will run pass the Pistons, and mix with the oil - causing even more problems to the engine.
If you remove the dipstick, you might be able to smell petrol on the dipstick - and the color of the oil might indicate that it is mixed with petrol. Should you track any traces of petrol in the oil, you must rather not drive the Lada - until the problem has been solved. The oil then needs to be changed immediately.
I would suggest that you also do a compression test on each cylinder to see whether the engine compression is still OK.
A faulty /sticky Choke could also cause excessive black smoke - so you should also have a proper look at the Choke - to see whether it opens properly.
I do not have any knowledge about TBI models though - the other guys might be able to give better advice.

Hi Maddy
That sounds like loose baffles in the exhaust system. When they move they block the outflow and cause a pressure build up. Co is usually measured at the end of the exhaust with a probe.
That's what I'd check for 1st(loose baffles)

Faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor will have the same effect of driving a carb car on full choke all the time? John

I was actually guessing that the TBI models do have some sort of a choke, and that the choke might be stuck closed all the time for some reason.
Spikes could be on the spot though - I would remove the silencers , and shake it. If the baffles are loose, the loose plates will then make a noise.

Hi Maddy
This is ABC and I'm online today.
In the "fuel injection experts" thread Spikes has posted the TBI interface document from Baxter/Turbonutter. This will give you instructions on reading the ecu fault codes which will might give us a specific issue.
I replied on your pm with my number if you want to call for assistance.
Or just check the pipe leading to the MAP sensor. It runs from a small black plastic "manifold" on the engine side of the throttle body to a small electronic sensor on the firewall. Mine has broken off twice and then the fuel consumption goes to hell which gets the wife on my case very quickly.
But the ecu error codes will give us a better understanding of the problem
