I have helped on such a conversion. But it doesn't work as a parking brake. Because as the brakes cool it let's go. So what works is to nut in a 2nd lever. Just a pipe that is standing straight. Works great in turns.

Hi guys, I have been having a heap of trouble with my brakes, took it to a mechanic and he is almost more puzzled than I am.
so down to the symptoms: There is very little pressure on the peddal, I have to push it in fully before I she brakes. It helps to pull up the handbrake a bit to just before it starts to brake in order to increase the peddal pressure very slightly
Things that have been checked: The friction pads on the shoes are still within spec The load sensing valve thingie looks to be ok, you can hear a squirting sound when the brake lever is depressed coming from it The master brake cyllinder is 1 month old (one of those samko ones that I bought from ventz) It has been bled close to 1 million times
Anything that I might have missed? Gonna try to get to a CBS this weekend

o ja, what I have to add is that the brake cyllinder is of the non-adjustable type (fiat uno?)

o ja, what I have to add is that the brake cyllinder is of the non-adjustable type (fiat uno?) Have you checked and serviced your front calipers (taken out the pistons and cleaned them)? Do you have the rear brake load adjuster installed? If so, is its sensor working correctly? It might need to opened and cleaned or replaced. Tjeers Steve

Another thought, do you have the correct springs in the rear brakes?

Hi Hanno
It is a while since I have had a Niva and my memory is not perfect, but I was never able to activate the rear proportional valve enough to hear anything. The spring inside is very strong. To me it sounds as if you have air somewhere. Try loosening one of the connections on the valve and then bleed it. Make sure the rear brakes are assembled correctly and the hand brake is adjusted correctly. Pulling the hand brake up is taking up slack between the shoes and the drum which you will feel at the pedal as the hydraulics do not need to take up the slack. Good luck.

Hi Hanno
Like Ronnie it sounds like there is some air issue, however you should be able to see a leak with that kind of sound. A flat peddle like that can also indicate some issues at the front like your new master brake cylinder could actually be faulty? Perhaps more likely - something could be wrong with the brake booster. Might not work as you already have a flat peddle but start the car with the brake peddle fully depressed. There should be forward movement on the peddle as you start the car. If not the booster could be faulty.

Hi guys, Thx for all the replies. I have checked the load sensing valve properly now myself and there is quite a lot of rust on there so I think it might be the culprit. Is the a way to function without it temporarily as I have to drive through to JHB on sunday and drive around there for a week? (might be a bit scary in jhb traffic without brakes!!!) Perhaps if you connect the two pipes going there to each other(bypassing the valve) or perhaps blocking them off? (not sure exactly how the load sensing valve works, I just know that it send more pressure to the rear tires when it is loaded and prevents the rear wheels from locking when its not loaded if I am correct) Then how do I clean it and get rid of all the rust on it? Does anybody have a spare one lying around? Gonna be in jhb next week if there is maybe someone there with a spare available? I have also taken advice from vents and adjusted the handbrake a bit tighter which gave me a bit more stopping power, its helps a lot but doesnt feel completely safe yet marius the brake booster does work, as I start the car I feel the pressure dropping as the booster kick in and the peddal move forwards.

There is a thread on the second page of the technical section on the brake pressure regulator. The detail is quite far down the thread.
Are the pistons in the front calipers free? And is the mechanic following the precise instructions as per manual for the bleeding?

So plan for now is to byspass the pressure regulator and bleed the system properly I can hear the front pads push into the disk when I do bleeding so I think the pistons are free, should I open it up nonetheless?

Read up in a Fiat Uno manual (that is freely available for download here:http://pokecccc.unas.cz/unomanual.pdf), the Uno rear brakes makes use of a self-adjusting setup located in the lower end of the Fiat rear brake shoe. This makes( in my opinion) the fitment of uno rear cylinders a temporary/emergency repair on a NIVA.

Hi Hanno
I also think you have a problem with the rear brakes not adjusting. I would order the correct rear brake cylinders. I reckon this will solve your problem.

Ok good news and bad news. Bad news is that my load adjusting valve is rusted stuck (think it is open though because i get pressure at the rear tires. I tried to remove it but the one metal pipe connecter going to it wont budge and is starting strip if I turn harder I took a toothbrush and baking soda and cleaned some of the rust off and gooi'd some red rubber grease on it just for in case it gets loose by iself that it would have lubrication and protection against water and dirt. Good news, after propperly bleeding the the car with the help of my friend's 'afrikaner boerkuite' I have sufficient breaking power again to feel safe driving it. Still need to replace that pressure regulator though. will contact ventz thx for all the help, I wouldnt have been dead without this forum!
