Hi All
Found this site on the internet and speaking to the person who's Lada I want to purchase. Main problem with it is that it is 2 years behind on the license but that can be sorted out. The gearbox is the main concern and seeing that its a Lada thing I would not like to purchase a hole. The second gear jumps out when you are driving it. I know that mike from 4x4 doctor worked on it a few times but would like some more info from people.

I would recomend giving Mike a ring and finding out all you can about the car. He will have history of everything he has done on the car and will also be able to assist you with repairs. His number can be found here: locsa.atspace.com/technical.htmlCharles

Hi Charles
I did send him a mail but I am not sure when he last worked on the car as the current owner can not say. I hope that he can still remember the car. The quote that he gave did not include the gearbox. There was something about the float of the carb as it wont idle with out the choke out. Main concern is the fact that the second gear jumps out and I read on the form that it might be the selectors or even bearings. I know some one that got a quote for 13k to redo the box.

That is madness. The box is easy enough to do yourself.

Hi
I think someone might be hiding some very important info from you.
I would make a special effort to talk to Mike. Also find out whether any work has been undertaken on the gearbox.
Surely the owner should remember what work has been done to the car ?
Then just trust your gut feeling. Just remember, there are quite a number of Ladas on the market at the moment...

Hi Danie
Most of the info I got on the car is
Work done already: - New clutch - Front diff replaced - Drive train seals and bearings - Prop shaft re-balanced - Exhaust manifold - Full service - New battery
Apparently there was a problem that if you put the car into diff lock it would not move that has also been fixed. I will try to contact Mike and see if he still remembers the car.

Welcome to the forum!
Mike is your best bet. But as Charles said, the gearbox is easy enough to work on your self. There is ample information on LOCSA, the Belgium Lada Niva forum and Baxter's to guide you through a rebuild Do not hesitate to ask questions to the forum.

This sounds like a Niva I saw on Gumtree recently, in the Langebaan area if I remember correctly. I am sure Mike will remember it as he has worked in it previously.
If I remember correctly a new gearbox from Pavel is about $370 (I may be mistaken), so that might be an option to explore. If the price I gave is right, will work out at about R5000 landed cost for a new one.

Hi ihar It is actually the other one that is on gumtree. It is a complete rebuild project. There is almost no interior in the car but I do not mind at all. Spoke to mike and he said that as long as the person is willing to rebuild it then it will be fine but you cant just get in and drive it

Hi and welcome to the forum. I can't actually believe that what I think I am reading here is correct - are you saying that someone you know was quoted R13000.00 by Mike to redo a Niva gearbox?? If this is the case I think I must start looking for a new home for the lovely Nikita (my Niva) before she develops any gearbox problems. NIKKI

Mike, to clarify, the add said it was just the gearbox that needed fixing and the quote was R13000 to be fixed at buyers cost

Hi
You guys are still talking about the white one that was in Saldana the one I am looking at is in Rosebank. I don't think that quote was from Mike as I spoke to him over the phone and we did not even get close to that amount. The one I am looking at has no interior or anything. It is not the white one in Saldana that is missing 20% of the gearbox.

I so badly wish I could buy an extra lada, especially a 1600. But times are tough right now. I also might be moving to New Zealand quite soon, which means I will have to sell my Niva. It makes me sad to think about it.

There are Nivas in New Zealand. Why the move?

Well, struggling to find meaningful work here, and I also feel like a change. I've trawled the NZ used car sites and the nivas there are extremely cheap, and tend to be 1600s. But I've always wanted a 1600, and I'll definitely get one when I go over. Then I can start again with building up a niva. I'll be relieved to leave RPG with someone who will care as much about her as I do.
