I am busy building up a Lada Niva. I stripped out the left front suspension but had to stop the project for some time. When I could start it again I found that all the parts for the suspension has been "donated to the needy". Thus I am looking for spares to complete the project. Ideally I would like to buy one that I can strip for spares. I am also looking for a complete engine. If you can help please contact me on 082 693 8395. I stay on the East Rand.

What Niva are you building up, a 1600 or 1700?

Hi Andrevr
Welcome to the forum - I would actually advice you rather to make a list of spare parts which are needed, an then get prices from the local Suppliers, as well as from Pavel who finds himself in the Ukraine.
Personally I would not advice you, or anybody to buy an additional Lada for spares - there is a huge possibility that many parts which you need, will be worn on the "spare Lada" as well. Then you will have to buy new parts anyway - or you will be sitting with two Ladas, without being able to get any one of them in reliable condition.
You might find that you will pay less for all spares needed - than paying for an extra Lada, which might be a piece of junk !
I once also thought I was clever - and bought almost all components which came from a stripped Lada . More than 80% of those components are worn - and today I am sitting with a lot of junk on my doorstep ....
Regards.
Danie.

Hi andrevr, It may be quite expensive to find a Niva engine in good running order in SA. I can only think it will be even more difficult to find a 1600 Niva engine, if that is what you are rebuilding. An alternative to the Niva engine is a Fiat engine, but I would recommend a Toyota 1600 16 valve, because they are relatively cheap and cheap to rebuild (most engineering shops know these engines quite well). It gives more than enough power and torque for a Niva. A standard Niva drive-train in my opinion should not be matched to a bigger engine than a 1600 or 1800, if you plan to use it off-road, because then you start to stretch a lot of things on the Niva. A lot of course depends on how the driver drives a vehicle. If you need some advice and help you can contact me as I am also from the East Rand. Hercules is also around you area and well equipped to assist you with the rebuilding and practical advice. Regards, Fanus
