You can select multiple pics in photobucket and copy the IMG URLs similtaneously into the text block to load more than one pic at a time.

Hi Douw The space on the right looks amazing after working on a standard lada. Ari Being a reverse head it seems to open up space on the one side. However, the carb might touch the battery so I may have to move the battery tray slightly and the spare won't fit under the bonnet in future.

Hi Douw I'm sure you expected the spare not to fit So its like the lada but with the carb and exhaust on the wrong side then? Still looks like lots of free space. try turning the battery 90 degrees. Ari

I didn't expect the spare to fit and frankly am happy with the more spacious layout in the engine bay. I was thinking I should try swing the battery tray 90deg, it should work.

Interesting thread Douw. I assume you are going to install a Toyota radiator ? Danie I am going to try the Niva radiator and will look at something else if that doesn't work. Do you have reason to think it won't work?

Hi Douw
Regarding your question - I think the Lada radiator is a bit "under designed" for very hot conditions. I am aware of reports about Ladas which got a bit hot during slow driving conditions (like slow driving in traffic) , as well as an increase in temperatures at higher speed.
If the Toyota engine was mine, I would rather install a Toyota radiator - it should not be too difficult to find a good one at a very good price .

Danie Hi Danie, There's no space for the mechanical fan so I intend fitting two 9 inch electric fans side by side, I'm pretty sure that should provide sufficient cooling. What do you think?

Hi Douw.
I had no problem with the cooling when I was running with two 9" electric fans only. What made me unhappy was when I fitted the air con condenser in front of the radiator. Then I was not as happy with the way the temp reacted. It never boiled and it looks to me as if the temp guage may read low,so perhaps I am being over cautious. Now with the correct thermostat fitted I need the Summer heat to see. Will need to wait for that.

Hi Douw
I think it would be wise to count the no of cooling tubes in each, and compare the size of the tubes, before changing. having said that it is my opinion (unproven) that the Niva radiator is marginal for this climate.

Hi Douw
One other point I have just remembered. When Ari`s Niva was new, and fitted with the same air con, it never overheated at any time even in the heat of summer on the hottest day in Botswana. Most of the Nivas in South Africa are now quite old and the cooling systems will not be LIKE NEW unless the radiator has been opened and the core rodded and the tanks cleaned. The pump is another part that could have badly corroded vanes, so it may not be the radiator which is suspect, but the age of the parts.

Thanks for all your advise and I'll most definately take everyones thoughts into consideration. I've spent quite a bit of money on this conversion so far and I have to start tightening the budget. However, I certainly don't want to pop an engine because I didn't want to spent a few hundred bucks on a suitable radiator. I'm sure the Toyota radiator would be the best option but I still think the Niva radiator with propper cooling fans will do the job just fine. I'll speak to Silverton and see what they say.
Thanks, Douw

Hi Douw
Check the size of the radiator because Toyota Radiators are deeper and narrower I think than the Lada one so it might not fit??
