Hi All
I am a new mommy to a little black Lada Niva 2000 sidekick. Living on the West Rand.
My Lada has the worst rattle under the front seats is sounds like she is about to fall apart I am afraid to just let any one work on her.
She makes this noise only when she was is in gear and actually driving when she is free wheeling there is no noise. Any ideas what is wrong with her?

Hi Hera
Sounds like there is something wrong with the gearbox or transfer box. My technical skills aren't that great, but I'm pretty sure one of the more technically informed members will comment soon.

Hi Hera- welcome aboard!
If the rattle is a low pitched thudding that increases while you accelerate, it's more than likely that your transfer box is unaligned and loose. You should not drive anywhere if that is what's happening. Will you take a photo of the car underneath from different angles and post them up here so we can can see?
I might come to JHB on thursday and I'll have a look if you like? I'll let you know.
I'm interested to hear that your Niva is black- I've not seen many black ones. Please post some pictures!

Hi Hera
Warm welcome to the forum - never seen a black one so yes please post some pictures.
If you hear a rattle under the front seats it could be a few things. First it could be something loose at the bottom of the seat - I would guess you still have the original seats? If so - the most likely culprit could be a loose adjusting arm (see the drawing attached). It could also be the adjusting arm rattling against the plastic trim on the side of the chair.
The red arrow indicates the fastening points (both sides) and the blue arrow the plastic trim.

Hi again Hera
If it is more a vibration from the floor under the seat you would need to look at balancing and aligning the intermediate shaft and the transfer case.

OK- I had a look at the FB pics, and it's doesn't look like the TC is loose, but a photo can't tell much here. There's a lot of oil coming out of the TC though. It might be worth getting the chassis steam cleaned before you carry on?

We seems to have found what might be the cause of the rattle in Sharkie, she has a busted engine mounting bracket. The guys are going to work on it to day. Please let this be the problem.

Hi hera.
Remove the mounting and let a good welder weld it with some stifners in and it will last.
Regards.

Hercules this is going to really sound like a typical girl question & I apologize in advance for it now, but what is a stifner?

Hi Hera Hercules normally only comes online late afternoon, so i'll take the liberty of answering. A stifner in 4X4 terms would refer to strengthening metal plates or supports made out of angle iron brackets. Normally done for suspension brackets. In fact there are very good examples of supports(stifner s) for the steering box and the front shock absorber mountings on the forum I am not to sure of the engine mounting brackets though. As far as I know it is NOT a common practice to add a stifner to broken mounting bracket. I am sure you will get further advice regards Spikes

Thanks spikes, well all brackets are intake so I have no idea whats wrong with her now. She was quiet for a few days but now she sounds like she wants to fall apart again. Getting a motor mech out to look at her. Need her fixed for the weekend. Need to go say good bye to my folks as they are going back to Canada.

Any good welder should be able to adequately repair it. But I'd replace it altogether (doubt it'd be expensive for a new one).
Also I'd avoid driving it until I had it fixed as it'll be passing stresses to other mounts etc and I wouldn't want to chance cracking the alloy diff casing.

The welding on the bracket (pic above) looks very dodgy .
It might make sense to have a close look at the other bracket at the rear of the diff as well. The bolt at the bottom could loose as well.

She's already ordered a new one from Ventz - most probably fitted by now.

Tip >> leave the welding to the pros unless you know what you're doing ;D

He is very fast indeed. Happy you got the part. The welding on that bracket looks abysmal from what I can see. Even if you got a pro to weld the old one it would not be an ideal situation (lots of stress on this particular bracket). I hope the welding didn't cost much- if it did, go bang the badly welded side on the head of the welder.
