Hi Spikes
I connected the two smaller pipes leading into the vapor tank with a T (that was hard to find) to the breather pipe.

Hi Guys.
I also thought about bypassing that little tank, but wanted to find out why it is important in the system first. But if we have vehicles running without it, I might just yank it out and get it over with. I have alot of respect for the original design of these vehicles, but some simplefication may just make life easier.
Spencer.

Hi guys
I also tried to fix the box with glue etc but it did not last very long. So far I had no issues with fuel streaming from the overflow - so I guess it's ok.

Hi Guys. Well, with the thing at Hennops coming up, it worried me that i gant fill up my niva. So I went loking for my leak. I was yanking on the tank which had been glued to the floor with petrol/bitumen, when I heard a whoosh and smelt petrol. The leak was actually at the fuel pump flange. Upon closer inspection I saw some of the little bolts were stripped. Added some washers and RTV sealant and left it to cure. I'll fill her up tomorrow and see if it is now sealed. As for the vapour tank. The top pipe leading to the gravity valve (mysterious metal marvel of unknown purpose) was broken off. Just as Ronnie told me. Whipped out the glue and spent another hour to get the little green pipes fitted again. It turned into a tour de force when I broke the top pipe off again... After an exercise in linguistic exorcism, I made a t-piece with some scrap refrigerator pipe and removed the vapour tank. ;D So here it is, breathing fuel caps are as useful as the episode of desperate housewives on tv right now... Hi Spencer When you have a Niva you learn quick . A lot of the problems were caused by previous owners. Screws do not strip them selves. Ronnie

Hi Marius I made up a temporary box and fitted it in place of the seperator. I filled up with petrol, and later removed the box which showed signs that petrol had entered it. As ypu said your "T" piece was working I have made up a small 1/2 inch copper pipe with 2 x 4 mm and 1 x 6 mm electrical ferrel. This is easy to make as you can solder it together. I have fitted it so we will see how long it lasts. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
I am sure that little DIY number will do the trick. I don't know if your fuel lines from the tank to the separator is similar to mine (thin green lines) but I found it hard to get a T that would fit both sides (the overflow line running from the separator tank).

Hi Marius
Mine are exactly the same as yours, and are a very tight fit on the 4mm Ferrel. If you heat them with a hair dryer they are so soft they go on quite easy, and when they are cold you cannot get them off as they shrink to the original size.

Hi All I made a connector to replace the leaking separator tank some time ago. Today with the petrol tank very full, and it being quite warm I had petrol dripping from the breather pipe above the petrol cap, due to expansion from the heat. I think the part I made needs a good bit more capacity. Ronnie Attachments:

My tank has been removed completely. I have quite a long breather pipe and so far no petrol has escaped but when it is full I get a very strong smell of petrol where the breather pipe exits.

The fuel separator is necessary part. Make it bigger - as middle size chess board.

Hi Guys.
I still had a problem with the petrol when I filled up, so I found another leak where the wiring goes into the tank on top of the pump flange. It has a little 90 degree plastic cap which had been forcefully abused. The solution in the meantime has been to squeeze it down with a wad of paper under the small inspection cover.
No smell or leaks since.

I think it would work best standing up with the single hole upwards to the outside vent, otherwise it wouldn't work at all. Charles the W one would only help by adding capacity and would also need to stand up. Ari

Hi Ari
It was standing up with a cable tie. It simply lacks capacity.

Hi Charles
Not had time to do anything about the tank yet. Vincent has the old tank to see what he can do. Whatever you make needs to have enough capacity to hold whatever petrol is pushed back due to expansion.

Hi
I have two large fuel filters which then run out the back drain plugs if they overflow, and it seems to be working fine.
I had a heavy fuel smell a while back, found that the nipple on the tank pressed against the plate covering the tank which ended up braking it.
