A backfire through the carbs sounds like the timing is out. I would recheck the timing is correct.

Is the timing pickup on the bottom pulley OK and is the sensor plugged in?

My 1st reaction was also that the timing was out, but my mechanic re-checked the bottom & top timing marks to be correct and I can confirm that the bottom pulley is OK and that the sensor is fitted and connected.
My mechanic is also convinced that when the bottom and top alignment marks line up that the timing is correct and it cannot be out?
Is this a valid assumption?
Any other suggestions?
Does anyone have a loose Top Gasket for a 1700 TBI?

Gasket is the same for all the 1.7 NIVA here in SA.
Sure the bottom gear is 100% aligned? On the one engine that I saw open that bottom mark is difficult to see with the engine in the car.

sounds like the plug wires are not connected correctly. Have a look on page 189 of the manual for a schematic diagram of the feed from the Ing modules the lefthand one in die diagram being the one closest to the radiator and feeding the front and rearmost plugs

Presuming the original reason for changing these components was just general wear, and nothing more serious, and the motor was otherwise running ok, then the new bits have been installed incorrectly. The is a case of strip it back and start again. Sorry! As said, double check the pulley positions. That's the most likely, and it only takes a tooth or two out (or missing!) to have it running like a bag of spanners! Regards, John.

John you are right, but this was not a wear issue, see photo above of the old parts. It look like the auto tensioner failed by not locking the pin that tensions the shoe and the chain eventually stretched so much that it grabbed the shoe and totally destroyed it, jumping teeth. Well further to the flames issue, we did a compression test and found that cylinders 1 to 3 had NO pressure and only no 4 was OK. See picture where it can be seen that the 1st three inlet valves are lower than the outlet valves. www.dropbox.com/s/i9cacb1906hsmcn/2013-11-05%2019.16.25.jpgWhen we removed the head it was clear that the 1st three cylinders have the intake valves bent. See picture. www.dropbox.com/s/sk6kbw8acphrc39/2013-11-05%2019.24.55.jpgYes so now it is getting the spares and repairing it. Thanks to all suggestions provided by all

Hi Darrele "auto tensioner failed" ! Would that be the same auto tensioner for which I have just placed an order with LadaPower for 'hundreds' of (well for several anyway) LOCSA members ! Did the instructions for fitting the auto tensioner come in English or was it Russian and Pictograms ? Am I going to go to sleep tonight or just stay awake wondering ...Help. Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

Thanks Darrel for that. I shall sleep tonight. Sorry though to learn of your misfortune. Hope that all comes right asap. As to parts...Pavel (LadaPower) is really good at getting them off the shelf and out to you as quickly as possible. Regards, Keith and CERATOTH

Steve, you are right about checking the sump for bits, never thought of it. I have ordered head and top gasket, inlet valve set and valve stem seals as well as new window winders. what is easier, removing the diff or engine?

leave the engine, leave the diff, leave the sump. There are thousands of niva's out there with timing bits in the sump. They won't do any harm, as long as it's not a chain or sprocket. Remove the front cover and try to get most bits out of the sump with a magnet
