Hi All. My Lada's 5th gear gave up on us today after a huge screeching noise and oil all over the road... Ruan had a look and says he has a 5th gear casing lying around I just need the insides or a cheap second hand gearbox lying around somewhere? Please help!!! My number 0726794237

Berto my suggestion is to ask Ruan to strip the gb for you in order to see the extent of the damage and then to order new parts from Pavel. His web site is www.ladapower.com. There are virtually no second hand gb's in a decent enough condition to consider canabalising them. Tjeers Steve

From what I gather the 5th gear came loose and popped out the back of the box so there could be casing damage.
Did Reg not have a box from his modification? Or Juan

Defenate broken casing!! It has a hole the size of a R5 coin on the bottom right of the 5th gear and reverse casing. Under the reverse sensor I soppose? Will start opening her up tomorrow evening. I'm more disappointed about my towing vehicle being damaged so close to the weekend and having no means to get my bass boat to the water than anything else!! BAD DAY!!

Most likely a broken bolt on the 5th cluster gear that caused the damage - with the emphasis on mostlikely - for all the little terabites I've been getting lately ;D ;D ;D

Hi All.
The Lada is running fine again! I baught a second hand gearbox and just went on fitting it. Ruan helped me loads as after I first completed the intallation I owned my first JACKHAMMER!!! The LADA was shaking like an earthquike with a 10 rating.
The gearbox broke when one of the gear leever bolts came loose and fell inside the box. The 5th gear and reverse casing broke and one of the teeth on 5th chipped a little, about 5%.
On the replacement box I now installed locknuts on all 3 those bolts!
I'll fix the gearbox and it might end up as for sale.

BertoI have moved this thread to Technical. If you do put the "spare" gearbox up for sale, you are most welcome to open a new thread for the box Spikes

Have look at this thread : "possibly a cheap fix for the fifth gear problem" in the technical section. The lock washer and GL 5 gear oil and not lugging in 5th ie below 80km/h will go a looooong way to avoid problems Spikes

Hi Bill,
The moderators are busy downloading the original attachments, saving them, then uploading to photobucket from where it is relinked to the original post. I'll have look and see if I can find the specific washer and related attachments today and fix that

well so far my 5th gear mod seems to work perfectly, i'm not going to say too much yet as i'm still testing it and don't want anyone to try it and it doesn't last... all i'm saying is it took a helluva lot of measuring a bit of lathe work, a tiny bit of welding and milling, all seems worth it though gearbox is silky smooth in comparison to how it was before

Sounds promising Sparky!
Say two months for measuring and lathe work.... so you could be running the mod since August.
