We bought our Lada in 2001 as a Family vehicle when we had to drive a bad road. The kids were small and it was the best we could afford. (My wife once sqeezed in 9 primary school kids in the Lada. ;D ) It has taken us to some pretty places to do some wingshooting and flyfishing. The nice thing is I can load the dogs in the back and wipe the hair with a wet cloth. I had a sticker made that says "Russian Range Rover". People read it at he stop streets and robots and it brings a smile to their face. Here is a pic at the end of the day after some wingshooting with our muzzleloader shotguns.

My wife and two sons went to Nelspruit this weekend with the Lada. There were a few young guys that also drove a Lada with Forestry sticker on the car. They wanted to know if we don't want to sell the Lada. My son answered "No, .. in fact we would like another one... "
Seems there are more people out there that loves their Lada.

If it was light blue its fire fighters based at the Working on Fire station. The Niva sort of stays there with different drivers every season.

My son says it was a white Lada that said Forestry Service and it had lights on the roof.

We had a close encounter with the Lada this past Saturday night. We were returning from Ermelo on the road between Hendrina and Middelburg. It was dark and there was a lot of Trucks and traffic on the road. A person (without a brain) passed a truck on a solid white line stretch of road with his taxi or Combi. I had to swing out and drive on the gravel next to the road to avert a head-on collision. While Mr. Brainless happily drove on ( he most probably threw me that kind middle finger to say thank you like they sometimes do but it was dark and didn't see his signal). The Lada sure made a good transition from tar to gravel and back to tar at 80 km/h.

For some time my wife and then my son at University was driving my Lada. I have been driving it again for the last four weeks and I notice it needs a serious service.
1.The reverse gear is jumping out. The timing chain is making a noise. (After Jan's bend valves I'm quite concerned about this issue.) The heater is leaking if you switch it on. (this one is not a big concern to me. I just don't switch it on)

Hi Christiaan
The reverse gear is quite unusual but it is probably a warn syncro sleeve? Have you re-tensioned the timing chain? You MUST do it at least every 10 000kms. The heater issue is probably the valve that is buggered?
Regards Marius

If you have not had the chain adjusted, it should be done as soon as possible. There is a complete Youtube video about the adjustment procedure.
When you have the gearbox taken out, so replace the thrust washer and consider doing the clutch plate and release bearing at the same time. Also a good time to replace the rubber doughnut between the TC and gear box.
Unfortunately these parts (except the clutch plate and release bearing) are NIVA specific so you may have to live with gear jumping out if you have to drive the NIVA

Please please please adjust the timing chain urgently, it is literally no more than a 10 minute job and something most people "forget" to do.
You need a 13 socket, short extension, a hammer and a gentle slope.
