Rudi, why is it irreparable? When you find a replacement, I am sure Charles or Ari will be able to point you in the right direction, could I purchase your existing carb please? Did you see the thread about the Gauteng social in July? Christo, also from Potchefstroom is considering coming to join us, would you be interested as well, this is the link - locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1165Tjeers Steve

I fully agree with Ihar - rather buy a carb kit, or a complete new carb from Pavel.

Hi Rudi You need a Paypal account for purchases from Pavel. PayPal will issue and electronic payment request which will show the exact Rc cost. Only when you accept the request will the payment be processed. For quick calculation multiply by the going R/$ rate around R8/$ now (I think)
As for the carb leaking air, there is a temporary repair that you can try. Get the thinnest copper shim plate you can find, wrap a layer around the shaft and check if still sucking air add another layer if needed. IT IS A TEMPORARY FIX ONLY

Hi Rudi Just send Pavel an email, and ask him for prices , which includes shipment cost via: a) Standard Airmail b) EMS (Speed post) You can then just type in the quoted prices at this link, to get the prices in ZAR: themoneyconverter.com/USD/ZAR.aspxDanie

If you have a bank account with FNB, it is easy to transfer money into and from your PayPal account

Me again, again the repair kit is only applicable if you still got an original carb in your Niva

I would also advise you to get a new carb from pavel. A weber carb is fairly a straight swap, but it is not that great offroad. Charles

Ventz is extremely reliable and very knowledgeable.
He will most likely not be able to beat Pavel's prices, but then you need to weigh up how quickly you need the parts, as in 3 or 4 days from Ventz vs a few weeks to a few months depending on what shipment method you select from Pavel.
Most of us here have used Ventz for something at some stage. You can also try Mike in Cape Town, or Chris Swales in Durban. All 3 are well known and respected parts suppliers.

Hi Charles
I also use gas torch cleaners to enlarge the jets. You can also solder the hole up and re size it. If you want to re drill with the cleaners cut the tip with sharp pliers and it will re cut the soldered jet. Grip the cleaner in a vice and spin the jet with a drilling machine (slowly)

Hi Charles
The only way to keep the old methods alive is to talk about them. They are especially usefull when you have an old vehicle.

they may be old methods but have been tried and tested. who knows, the knowledge may come in useful for somebody stuck in bundu one day. i still have 5cm x 5cm piece of copper shim rolled up in my toolbox(in cylinder of pvc pipe) last time i used a piece was to help a guy on the beach at Sundays river to get his beach buggy running. the carb was sucking air at the butterfly shaft

It would be pretty hard to beat a brand new standard carb. There are other options but a new standard one would be a winner.

I would strongly recommend a webber carb swap over the original solex as its been said prior it's a straight forward job for any techie, just make sure you fit plastic floats as it'll function perfectly offroad and not suffer from stalling issues on steep inclines. You'll love the power delivery and response. Chalk and cheese!

Also do not forget the spacer plate, otherwise the petrol will boil in the carb.

Good day to all
Second hand Lada carburetor SOLEX - striped, chemically cleaned and overhauled - R2500.00.
What do you think cheap or expensive?
Kind regards Rudi

Expensive very expensive. Full carb kit including jets, diaphragms etc is only $15
You can do every thing yourself except the chemical clean, but white vinegar works almost as good.

Rather import a brand new carb. Then you know it is perfect.
