Hi Nikki
I don`t think the overflow bottle not working will make any difference to the temp. Many cars did not have one and if you fill up the radiator to the top it will simply let the water as it expands overflow on to the road. When you check the level it will be down about 30mm. This is where it will then remain and the car will run fine. The MG is old enough to be like this and the day I picked it up in York it was very warm and there was no problem. The 3.8 MK11 jag was the same and once the radiator and cowl problem was fixed I did at least 100000kms in it with no problem. The air in the header tank will not cause an air lock. It will be interesting to see what happens when you fit the thermostat.

For starters fabricate a oowling for the radiator. The fan is not effective without it

i see on the grill side of the radiator there seems to be a frame like thing for a fan ? should i fit an electric fan to pull air into the radiator as well maybe?

Glenn, Bear in mind that the front mounted fan must actually push air through the radiator

Hi Spikes
I agree the cap looks like a standard local cap which would be wrong. I know in the parts books there was caps shown for deep necks but I was never able to obtain one. Like you I bet the cap is wrong ;D.

Cap looks suspect. But a cowling is also going to help big time.

Hi Glenn
It does appear that your cap could be the main problem here. You should try and get a new original cap and see if it makes any difference.

Hi All I noticed the other day the electric fan coming on in the MG BGT when driving in the country. It was the radiator with a pin hole and a very fine jet of expensive 4 life going to waste. As I had an oil leak anyway I thought I would remove the motor and fix the oil leak and check the motor over. As we have reports of Niva`s overheating I thought you would be interested in one thing I see in the MG motor which could affect any vehicle. There are 2 cooling holes beside each cylinder in the head and block. If you look at the head you will see some are completely blocked, some are partly open and some are open. This must seriously affect the water circulation. I already knew the drain on the block was blocked and in the past I had made an adapter for where I had remover the drain plug and used 10 bar of air pressure to try and clear it to no avail. I have now used a long thin screwdriver and hammered it through one of the cooling holes and there is about 25mm of solid sludge at the bottom of the block. Apart from the reduced circulation there will be localized overheating in the block as there will be no water along the bottom of the cylinders. Ronnie
