Hi Charles
That weld has lasted a long time so it was not too bad. The way the wheel is now located in the locked position will put more strain on the area around the bottom hinge than MY DESIGN. ;D ;D ;D

Vincent let's just say we had to gun it to get through some of the stuff. Also it was a bit bouncy. Maneged to through mud inside the car!
Ronnie the main reason why thge carrier broke was because its rusted through on the inside.

Hi Jan,
I saved the remarkable picture of the two Nivas on my computer to show my sons how a grown up Niva looks like!
My Niva will however always remain small. I love small things that work well (not that I have a problem with big things that work well). Maybe it got to do with my lazy nature; one of the biggest frustrations in my life was to recover fully loaded trucks (for example, I may have unloaded (and loaded again) more than 10 000 bags of cement with my hands in Botswana, if not many more - it felt like 100 000 of course). I also like the thought that my Niva may look lighter to push when I get stuck ;D
A winch like yours easily pull +-400 to 800 amps while realy winching, so I assume you have a battery bank also somewhere in the Niva? Maybe you could share some information on your battery setup?
If you need info on deep cycle batteries and charging systems let me know, because I have learned a lot lately that is definitely going to save me a fortune and reduce nasty surprises while on long off-road trips. Some of the things may even be a surprise to many. One is never too old to learn!
Regards,
Fanus

Fanus, i actually run it with one battery. I had an Optima yellow top before, but after 7 years of hard work it died on me. Now i have a normal battery for the time being untill i have the funds to buy an Optima again (300€). My alternator is an 90 amps. It helps that my niva is a diesel, no amps needed for running. I'm planning on a new setup with two seperated batterys, a normal starting battery and a yellow top for winching and lights. If you have any info on how to charge the two seperately, please let me know

Hi Fanus
I would be very interested to know all your information on charging dual batteries as it is a very complex subject. I have used National luna dual system for a long time with good sucess. The only problem is after a time the battery reaching full charge first will effectively stop the other battery being fully charged. I solved the problem the easiest way by simply fitting a second alternator. Two 90 amp alternators and away you go.

Hi Fanus
I would also like to hear all the info you have on duel batteries. I have a 657 that I actually want to fit in the Niva. Just have to build a new battery bracket. Will do that as soon as I get my welder in the middle of the month (thanks again Vincent).

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D How strange, First of all, Hey guys. I'm new around here. Browsing around (this epic board) and I see this blue lada. Its sitting in my drive way right now. Such a fun little buggy. Bought it from a guy in Port Alfred, who bought it from a mechanic in Humansdorp (apparently) Is that you who he bought it from, Charles?

I bought it as we needed to go to Sodwana Bay in it (From PE) and wanted something capable and fun. We really had fun on some of the sand dunes and stream crossings. I unfortunately don' t have any pics on the pc of the Dune work. When I got it, I needed to replace the radiator. I serviced it and fitted a bullbar, spot lights, rear bumper and roof racks. I also connected up the electric fan (Which came in handy on the dunes in low range with the summer sun glaring down). I also got the windows tinted so people wouldn't see in. ( the locks on the door can be opened with anything, so my tinted windows were our only line of defense). It ran well to Durban, where the dreaded 5th gear gave in and resulted in an expensive fix at Chris Swales motors, aka "e-Car" in Pinetown. R8300.00 later and we were set to go. This happened during the Easter long weekend periods and i was forced to pay our way to Sodwana Bay and pay my way back 10 days later to fetch it. Since then, it hasn't given any problems at all. Actually I lie. I now sit with a brake booster that seems to be pushing fluid into the exhaust (weird, I know), a bunch of worn bushes at the rear and no real locking system on the car. Other than that, I love it Below (or above, not sure how this photobucket thing is gana work) are some pics. PS, Whats up with the paint work on the drivers side? Whoever sprayed the whole car did an excellent job, but I think someone got into some flatting paper and did some work on the drivers side. PPS, sorry for hi jacking this thread. PPPS, can i get parts from you Charles? (cheaply ) **EDITED TO SHOW PICS ON FORUM INSTEAD OF LINKING TO PHOTOBUCKET (09.07.2013)

It definitely was used well . Spending some money on it now and will keep it as a spare car/bush runner. bigger Wheels (wider) , new bullbar, replacing all the bushes in the suspension. I am going to replace the master cylinder seals today. They are letting brake fluid into the inlet manifold and producing copious amounts of white, horrible smelling smoke. Thank goodness i read the post here about compatible parts bought the seals from an uno today.
