Hi Trevor
I also look forward to your report. I also have made a great stride forward with a problem which has haunted me for a long time. I will again let Vincent drive mine tomorrow to get an independent verdict.

Hi All
Had Vincent try the Niva today and his verdict confirms mine. The vibration has mostly gone and what is left does not intrude into the driving pleasure.

Hi Trev / Ronnie This is indeed very good news ! If your mods really work, I am going to stop fiddling with my own "subframe project" ! Sounds like Autovaz should offer you guys a free visit to Russia ! ;D Danie

Hi Danie
My little mod will only work if there is a problem with the T/C mountings being hard against the one side of the slots. What caused this to happen to start with beats me. I am just happy my Niva is nice at long last.
Ronnie
PS A trip to Russia would also be accepted. ;D

Well Guys ,I took the Niva for a burn today and yes my little modification has worked a real bloody treat .what i done to fix this night mare of a problem was ,number 1,Dill the slides in the T/C mountings so as the mounting could move forward about 4mm as i noticed the doughnut was running in a zig zag pattern there for creating a bad vibration within itself .I have got it running perfecty straight for now as far as back and forth is concerned .What im to get hold of is another spacer ring to fit between the T/C Input flange and the gearbox output shaft flange .There is a pic of this spacer plate further back in this thread .Number two was when i first undid the flanges beteen T/C and gearbox i immediatly noticed that the T/C Flange was about 4 to5 mm to the right hand side of the gear box flange so tried to pull it over but it would not move one bit .So my plan was to cut 5mm off the inside of the mounting rubber which is the little lip bit in the centre of the rubber as this does not weaken the mounting in any way shape or form .What this does in fact is allow movement both forward and backward as well as sideways for faultless alignment adjustments. After alignment is acheived simply pack the mounting gaps on both sides with a suitable thickness washer and what you end up with is a vibration free Lada Niva and a real pleasure to drive .Now this may not be every ones problem fix but its certainly worth your while to undo the 4 flange bolts and see how far out of alignment your ini joints realy are .This is a very easy fix and costs nothing to fix as far as money is concerned .my little Lada is as great to drive now as any other 4x4 and Totaly Vibration Free. I will post up some videoes and pics of mod when i can get time for you guys to have a look at .Cheers Trev .P/S I thought at first this was caused by my engine being off centre in the mounts but after carefull inspection this was not the case .'

Hi Trevor
You have exactly the same problem as I had. I was able to correct it with a 3 mm spacer behind the T/C input flange. Like you have found it cured the vibration

Hi Danie
I think it would be wise to make sure every thing is as it should be, and only look at a sub frame if all else fails. I am what is known as a "happy chappy" at long last.

Hi Trevor Amazing it is. . Perhaps this problem is not unusual and may help other members. The only good thing is we have a sub tropical climate so it is not very often it is cold. In fact the only time it is cold is when I want to lie under the Niva ;D. Ronnie

Hi Danie I think it would be wise to make sure every thing is as it should be, and only look at a sub frame if all else fails. Ronnie Hi Ronnie This is exactly what I was thinking. I think there is a big possibility that you and Trev have discovered an inherent problem on most Ladas out there. Trev, it would be nice to see quite a few pics with detailed explanations about your mod - this could help everyone to understand exactly what you are talking about. If you can't solve the Photobucket issue, you are welcome to forward the pics to my e.mail address - I could post it here. Regards Danie

Thanks Ronnie and Trevor As Danie said, pictures would really help a lot to illustrate everything that has been done. And how about posting a combined write-up to Baxter's? Thanks again Spikes

Hi Spikes
It is not really possible to take photos "after the event" but I will take a picture tomorrow of the way it should be and an explanation of what was done to cure it. The one problem which remains is what was responsible for the problem to start with, and this i can`t answer. I thought at one time that I may have altered the length of the intermediate shaft when I had it stripped. I removed the shaft again, stripped it and there is no way it can be assembled to change the length.

Thanks Ronnie I'll compare with mine as it is at present and if set back as you and Trev found I'll take some pictures. Fortunately there is a ride on ramp not to far from me so I won't have lie on my back Spikes

Hi Spikes I will try to show you what transpired with the mounting of the transfer box. Some time ago I noticed the slots in the mountings were hard against the studs. It was only recently i realized this could be a problem in aligning the T/C as I had effectively run out of adjustment. In the photo you will see the studs are clear of the FRONT of the slot. Before fitting a 3 mm spacer behind the T/C input shaft the stud was hard against the BACK of the slot. Probably a 2mm spacer would have been better, but the main thing is there is clearance. This really is all I have done to remove the vibration apart from spacers under the mount, which I added to until the levers stopped moving back and forth. The alignment was simply done at 3500rpm in 5th gear. Ronnie Attachments:

Hy Drive train vibration is now horrible.
I think that I need to realign the whole setup.
Who knows of a good propshaft place that would be able to balance an intermediate shaft?
Regards Vincent

Vincent I would think on gravel roads you would not feel the vibration.

Vincent I would look elsewhere first. Rather make sure that your Ujoints and the CV are greased properly (me telling that to the oil baron! ;D) Also check if the CV actually runs straight and smooth. The next step would be the bearing and the seal on the rear of the TC. Only then would I look at balancing the prop shafts if the vibration still persists. Marius

Hi All I forgot to mention about the nuts holding the T/C and Gearbox mounts in place. On mine when I got the vehicle, one of the T/C mount studs had 2 nuts on as the threads were stripped. As all the threads not being used were good I replaced all the nuts with "joining nuts". Here is a good pic of one and you will get them at any "good electrical Wholesaler. Ronnie Attachments:

Hi Marius Yes they are greased I want to make sure that the propshafts are not the source of vibration. As the Rusti was purchased second hand I have to assume that the moegoe before did not do it. Regards Vincent

Hi Ronnie With reference to your pic above, I just wonder whether those studs are located at exactly the same spot on all Ladas I know this sounds impossible, but I have just had a proper look at the two rubber mountings which held my Lada's Transfer box in place, and at one of the rubber mountings the washer "footprints" can be seen right at the center of the slots ! Unfortunately I never took any pics of the position where the studs were located on my Lada, but as far as I can remember, the studs were located more ore less at the center of the slots. On the other one the washer "footprint" is not as clear as on the first one, but it is also seem to be located at the the center . I also have two spare rubber mountings somewhere in my garage, and hope to have a look for washer marks tomorrow. I will forward a pic of the washer footprint on my rubber mounting later this evening - when my wife gets back with the camera. Danie

Hi all
My Niva has basically no vibration. Fiat doughnut, no centering bush in the intermediate shaft and no shimms under the tc mounting.

Hi Charles
You are lucky .I hope it stays like that. I also think if things like the universals the intermediate shaft etc are correct there should be little problem in aligning everything and being virtually vibration free.
