The interior of a Lada is not exactly modern but I find it quite practical - esp the rubber mats. Very easy to clean and you can spill just about anything. I once broke a bottle of red wine in the car. Can you imagine if it was carpeted ;D No-no-no!!! One should never break a bottle of red wine. And cleaning a carpet would not have been punishment enough. ;D Yes Jaco that was a very sad day but at least the car smelled like well matured red for quite a while ;D Marius

Hi Darius
Looks like you "almost" have your mind made up ;D
I would advise that you test the 5th gear and see if it is Ok. If it's not Ok you can always try and get the asking price a bit lower?

What would you mean with ok Marius? Pardon my incompetence.... As I drove the Niva the gear change so smooth I didn't even know it was in gear, I wanted to force it a bit more, with my DC Triton you can feel it jumping into gear but not with the Lada. I will give it another go when I go to collect the vehicle, I'm going with R19k cash in my pocket... If it does not suffice I will not take it. I was stupid not to test all electrical!!!!!!!!! I was so focused on getting the price down that I completely forgot. I noticed the wiper blades need replacing. I must also remove the immobiliser system that was put in. Ah yes, There is a electronic ignition system in that I think was not standard (see added picture). You guys will know better. But driving it was not bad at all. So my mind is sort of almost made up. Besides, how long will it take me to find a decent lada at what price. I have to sell my Triton now and need a vehicle, at least with the lada niva I can do something with it later on when I get another car. Just imagine me getting a golf or something, I am not going to tune it so that I can go racing at voortrekker road in pretoria!!!

Hi Darius Pardon my assumption ;D The 5th gear has a habit of jumping out of gear. You can test the 5th gear firstly by seeing/feeling if it actually goes into 5th gear whilst driving. If you do get it into gear you can test it for jumping out of gear by suddenly lifting the accelerator for a brief second. If it does not jump out of gear - the 5th gear should be fine (for now). In order to solve the 5th gear issue once and for all you can read this thread >> locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=114 Marius

The Guy had a look at the diff locks this morning, apparently there is a little pin or something that was sticking out and he lubricated it with oil, oushed it in and the diff lock works fantastically

Hi Marius, could you refer me to a forum discussion on what you guys recommend on the thermostat and how to prevent the Lada from overheating.

Thanks Jaco you are most welcome - Darius I would recommend that you take the time and read through the whole thread. All 29 pages! Info on how to fill the car with coolant can be found here>> locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=22&page=7Note - not everyone agrees that you need to have the Lada at a slight angle to fill her with coolant - but I find it very effective to remove air from the system. Hope it helps Marius

Hi Darius
I filled mine recently for the first time with an original thermostat fitted. On level ground, with top heater hose at the back of the engine removed. Filled till water appeared (and antifreeze) refitted the hose, topped up and run the engine up to temperature. Topped up again when cold the next morning and it has been full ever since.

And why not have carpet in the Niva? Not everyone wants do go diving with their Niva.... I wouldn't mind a nice carpet finish... But I don't know whether I will be riding 4x4 events or not. They do have water pools to ride in I believe... But that is to worry about then

Hi Darius
Many members fitted their Ladas with carpets - and I must say most looks very pro. The one positive thing about using carpets - is that it cuts down road noise significantly.
The rubber mats are just much easier to clean - especially if it's mud or red wine! I like to keep things simple and as practical as possible.

Hi Darius
Fitted carpets makes a big difference to the noise inside. I was lucky as the original rubber mat had raised sides so water does not reach the carpets which remain clean. If you intend wading in water then I would not recommend carpets, rather use rubber which can be removed to dry out the inside.

Don't worry about diving and taking part in events - if you do look well after your Lada, it will serve you well.

I will do so soon... Only took it to throw in Fuel... Its not yet lisenced and there is a oil leak in the head gasket which I am going to fix first. I would like to service it before I go out for a ride. I'M AS HAPPY AS HAPPY CAN BE WITH THE LADA. Really not in a bad condition. Needs a bit of TLC then she will be a bomb.

Yes This happens :-)
Start with the basics like a REAL service with LOTS of love etc.
Download the maintenance manual and familiarise yourself with timing chain adjustment etc.
Read the oil thread and select your Lubes of choice and get stuck in :-)
