Ronnie, unfortunately Sani Pass will never be the same again. As far as I know, the pass is under construction at the moment - the pass will become tarred and unlike the past, any 2 x4 vehicle will be allowed on the pass in future. The pics under this topic might just become a pleasant memory of wonderful experiences at Sani Pass by many 4 X 4 enthusiasts................ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sani_Passwww.ppf.org.za/news.php?pid=160&mid=623Regards Danie

DANNIE.
I hove never spent much time touring SA as i have a great love of the wild game reserves of Botswana, having spent at least 6weeks there every year for many years.Any one wishing to travel to Bostwana,I will gladly answer any questions I can. Unfortunatly,it is not a cheap destination, but it is more than worth it.Depending on the time of year the driving can be quite entertaining and demanding.
regards

"notice the green Niva has sliding back windows a la Lada Centurion. "
Ronnie, just as a matter of interest :
I often wondered about the history of the sliding windows, and I assume that Jan installed the windows on request.
Do you have any history related information regarding the sliding windows?

Danie Jan at Lada Centurion told me he had them made to aid ventilation,as he does not recomend a/c. He charges R900 per side. I had them fitted and after looking at them I would not like to fit them myself as they look very tight in the rubbers. They certainly help. Perhaps Ari can let us know if the A/C in his Lada still works.

Ronnie, information about aircons in Ladas would be very interesting - I am sure more members would appreciate comments by owners in this regard as well.
Comments regarding your own experience are more than welcome.

Dannie,
Jan contends the compressors are too large for the Niva motor. With respect, I do not agree. I think his concern is when ideling, with the compressor running the revs are too low and this drops the oil pressure. However is is a simple matter to add" an idle up "solinoid to increase the revs at tick over. I installed an A/C in my 1400 nissan and had no problems. I also had no problems with ARI,S niva. Some members must have A/C,S fitted and can comment.
Regards
Ronnie.

I found this pic from Sani Pass elsewhere on the web - the pic has been taken about two weeks ago, which means at least some parts of the pass are not under road construction yet: These pics shows the Sani Pass area, and has also been taken about two weeks ago: Danie

Just some good news about the road construction at Sani Pass:
Due to a lack of funding, as well as the ecological sensitivity of that area, the road construction project has been put on hold.
At the moment they are just preparing the first 14 km after the turnoff at Himeville for tarring..........which means lots of 4 x 4 fun on the rest of the pass.

Hi Danie.
The turquoise Lada with the trailer is yours truly Jan's Lada and the blue intermediate is some friends Lada. If you look at Jan's web page you will see a photo of the Lada's in Lesotho in the snow. On his previous web page were a photo of the Lada with the trailer.
Regards.

Ok KZN and EC folks.
I am planning a day trip up Sani Pass and down again.
This will happen either the 3rd or 10 of December.
Ronnie and I will be heading up.
We plan to meet up in Himeville, once assembled, we will make our way up the pass. Once at the top, weather permitting have a lunch stop and then head back down again.
Regards Vincent.

Just make sure that you stick to the speed limits at all times in Mozambique .
According to recent comments in a magazine (Leisure Wheels I think) the Moz cops dish up insane fines in this regard, and one can even end up in jail quite easily...

We plan to meet up in Himeville Regards Vincent. If possible, try to visit the Himeville Museum - before you go up the pass. The caretaker at the Himeville Museum is a very interesting guy, who knows a lot about the Sani Pass history. Many years ago he also owned a transport company, which operated on the pass, and he also wrote a book about the Sani Pass history. This book is also for sale at the Himeville Museum. Danie

Hi Danie
One other thing members should be aware of, and this definitely applies to Botswana is any fine will be payable there and then, before you proceed any further on your journey. If you do not have enough Pula on you to pay you had better be ready for a long walk to the nearest bank as the traffic dept will not allow you to move the vehicle until the fine is paid in full.

Hi Vincent,
Good idea about the trip up there. But for one day it's a little bit heavy. It is not impossible but for the joy of the experience it's better to spend the night on the top. It is great to have braai and unlimited beers above the clouds; it's good also for the fellowship. The Lada gets the distance of 8 km for ~2 hours only in low ratio and 1st and 2nd gear. The worst is just after the SA check point - the car jumps from one rock to another one. The use of 16" tyres and rims with proper offset is deadly recommended. And after this huge stress for the machinery and the driver, let they have good relief afterwards.
I've been twice there - in 1997 we spent 2 nights in a wild place near Mokhotlong and in 2004 we spend 2 nights at the hostel behind the Sani Pass pub. We even rented horses - the best 4x4, to explore the beautiful nature.
Actually the photos above are from this event in December 2004 - when KZN and Gauteng LOCSA members merged; more than 20 Nivas. I never seen these pictures before but now I even recognized my own Lada - the white one in front of the truck. Somebody later made a joke with the graphic design to write the logo Unimog Recovery Vehicle; I've never had such a sign of course.
Ronnie don't worry about the fines, there is no any traffic cop out there.
Rgds
