Possible solutions: 1. take out the parcel shelf; 2. use rubber bands to lift when opening the tailgate; 3. use aluminium flatbar and attach to the underside of the parcel shelf 4. 'still thinking.....' ;) It should be easy fixable, I'm still busy with the bigger projects/mods - i will eventually fix this too, but it's a bit lower down on my ticklist :) Just don't try drilling through..it makes a huge gemors and clogs up the drill. I drilled one hole to fit a flat sheet of aluminium where the bend in mine is. Gave it up till i find better way of making the holes

Dear Stefan and All Other Lada Owners with Roof Racks
I saw a few pics of Lada's with roof racks. Was it "Standard Issue" or is it After Market, if so please point me in the right direction for a reasonable one.
Regards Stephen

Hi Stephen,
I biuld the roofrack on my Niva myself and customized a normal (2 actually) roofracks to fit my needs and to be sure it's strong enough. I didn't want my jerry cans etc come flying of in the bush and hitting an innocent springbok or kudu.
I also fitted the spotlights etc myself and did the wiring to a DB (distribution box) inside. I made it out of lightweight aluminium where I could and the rest of flatbar (R 26,40 per length of 6 meter - I used 6 lenghts).

Wow,that really solved the problem. I also did mine in the same fashion, but only used black screws instead of rivets. I also strengthened the side (the plastic bits where you can install speakers) where the shelf rests on. Mine was a bit loose and cracked on the one side. Also made a bit of noise.

Thanks Hercules! I am going to nail holes through the carpet/shelf material into a block of wood, drill the sq tube and then pop rivet as drilling is a no-no and special tools to drill this type of material is not an option(Rc) regards
