Is that an early golf or polo engine? Thats a 2E motor. Nice thing about VW is that (as far as I know) all watercooled FWD motor have the exact same gearbox mountings. So this motor could possibly be found in golf, polo, jetta, caddy etc etc...

Thanks Mike, That is an old motor, just using it to mock-fit and see whether this will work. There's still a ton of work to do...

Hi Douw
What bellhousing are you going to use, and how are you going to link the Toyota box to the bellhousing / engine ?

Hi Douw What bellhousing are you going to use, and how are you going to link the Toyota box to the bellhousing / engine ? Danie Hi Danie, I will be using a Cressida auto box and there are many different bellhousings available for that box. I'll need to find one that has a suitable starter position and then make an adaptor plate to mount the box to the motor. There is a company in the states called Acme Adaptors, they make VW to Toyota adaptor plates for Suzuki applications. They are priced from $400 to $1000 exl shipping. Having one made locally would be far cheaper. Douw

Hi Douw
Somebody - I think it was one of the guys at work , recently told me about a company in Durban who specialize in manufacturing adapter plates for engine / gearbox modifications.
If you are interested I can try to get hold of the company's details - who knows, maybe they've already made adapter plates for VW engine / Toyota gearbox modifications.

Hey guys,
I've been busy on other projects so haven't had time to spend on the Niva.
After much thought and weighing up the pros and cons, I've decided to fit a Toyota motor. I've collected a brand new Toyota 4Y motor and will start with the installation soon.
I'll post some pics soon.
Danie, please can you change the subject details of this thread, thanks. "Toyota 4Y and Cressida auto RWD transplant"

Thanks Koos. I don't know how I missed that but it's rather surprising that Danie left the forum. perhaps he was just "hole-full" of us... Hope not, I always appreciated Danie's constructive contributions... Anyways, I'll start a new build thread as soon as I have some pics to upload.

Hey guys, still no photobucket account so no pic unfortunately... Dropped the motor in place and to my delight the 4Y motor fits straight onto the Niva mounts and the positioning is purrrr-fect! I have a Toyota Cressida box but the bellhousing doesn't match the 4Y motor. I searched from Pretoria to Brakpan and eventuall bought a Y series auto box from Boston Jap-Tech (there are no loose Y series bellhousings on planet earth - apparently ). The box is exactly the same as the one I have eccept the bellhousing is Y series. So, I guess I have a spare box at least (seing as the one I bought comes with a big red 'no warranty, no refund' stamp on the invoice!) On sunday I'll pull the motor again and bolt the box to the motor and slid everything into place (hopefull as easy as that) ;D

I know you want to keep it simple but how about the fuel injection system from a GWM? That is a fuel injected 4Y.

Hi all.
What is nice of the 4y motor is that you can change the standard distributer to a full electronic distributer for under R700.00. The dissy comes complete with rotor, cap, coil and plug wires. It also got only two wires to connect, one positive to the ignition and the negitive to the revcounter.
Regards.

Those engines never gives problems. The only thing that goes is that carb. That takes about 300 000km and a new one is about R650. Fantastic engines. Should be good on fuel as the Niva is very light compared to a |Hilux or Siyaya.

I have no immediate need for fuel injection. I know that most of the guys that buy FI 4Y engines for their taxi's convert them to carbs, thus there are loads of FI manifolds and injectors lying around for dirt cheap. This is one instance that I must agree with taxi drivers... ;D

A converion that most of the 4y drivers also do is a 1800 golf carb. Alot more power and better fuel economy. Just stay away from motopart carbs.

Charles True, the Niva is light but I have it on good authority (my lower back never tells a lie) that the gears as well as the shafts in an auto box are manufactured from lead and the box, without linkages and cables, weighs more than a Lada with a full tank of gas! ;D
