Hey guys, thanks for all the replies and advise. Hi Danie, Thanks for your replies and advise. Hi Roons, Thank you. Hi spikes, We've had many ours of fun travelling around in my Niva during the past year, I certainly am enjoying the fruits of my labour. Hi Marius, Thanks. Hi Charles, The fuel consumption isn't great. The diff ratio is bad. I removed the TC, which as you know is a reduction box so need to look at fitting a suitable diff in the future. My plan is to fit a diff with electronically activate difflock some day... Hi Steve, We should get together some time and you can go for a drive... I just need to make time...

Hi Douw
Depending on the top gear ratio at your automatic Gearbox, I think the Ford Ranger 2,5 TD rear Diffs might be a very good option. It came with Lockers at the rear diff, and if I remember correctly, the diff ratio is 3.72 : 1 .
The Lada rims will not fit - a further mod should be possible though.

Hi Danie, That's the exact diff that I was considering. It may be quite a huge mod but I would like to use the Niva side shafts and outer housings with the Ford diff housing... I'm still thinkifying on how to do it ;D Douw

;D That Ford diff casing will drag on the road surface. It is so big it would not look out off place on an Oskosh

Ari,
According to your tables, the engine revs/kmph will increase if I use the Ford diff. The TC is a reduction box, hence when it is removed the engine revs/kmph drop significantly (approx 20%). MY ENGINE REVS TOO LOW. Fitting a diff with a larger crown wheel will compensate for this problem. his is why I want to fit the Ford diff.
To illustrate - When you were riding your 12 speed Raleigh Racer to school, did you have to pedal faster when the chain was driving the smaller rear sprocket or when driving the larger rear sprocket?

Hi Ari
The The Toyota 4y engines kicks out 68 kw between 4200 - 4600 RPM, and 177 Nm between 2800 - 3200.
The Lada 1700cc engines kicks out 59 kw at 5400 RPM , and only 128 NM between 3200 - 3400 RPM.
This means the Toyota engine is stronger than the Lada engine by quite some margin - and is actually going "the right way"- not "the wrong way".
The Ford diff will obviously bring the engine RPM down, but while the Toyota engine is stronger (than the Lada's), I think there is a possibility that the Ford diff might work quite well on the Toyota engine.

Why not use the diff from a 2.2 Hilux?

Don't think that has a diff-lock as std

Hi Douw
What is your Toyota engine's RPM at 120km/h at the moment?
Another question: What is the gear ratio at the Cressida's top gear ?
By the way, I don't think the Ford Ranger's diffs are that big - my son owns a Ranger and I can take measurements, probably during the next weekend.

If the ford diff is 3.72 then you are going the wrong way from the 3.9 that you have at the moment. Ari Attachments:

Douw, the 3.72 : 1 diff ratios might be used in Rangers with bigger engines (i.e. the 4 liter V6 model), I am not sure at the moment. I once considered a Ford diff (with Locker ) mod to my Lada, and I did get hold of the "3.72 : 1" specs somewhere - but can't find it now.
Ari, for some reason I am not able to open files on my PC, so I do not have access to the link.
My understanding of diff ratios is as follows:
3.72 :1 means that the Drive Gear (Pinion) will rotate 3.72 full turns , while the Driven Gear (Crown Wheel) - (and therefore the driving Wheel) will only rotates one full turn.
3.9 : 1 means that the Pinion will rotates 3.9 full turns, while the Crown Wheel will only rotates one full turn .
Maybe my understanding of the Transfer Box as reduction box is incorrect:
Does the Transfer Box reduce engine speed, or wheel speed ??

It works the same as the diff and gb it reduces the wheel turns or lifts the rpm.

Yea - looks like my idea was completely wrong then. I actually thought Douw's engine revs are too high, and had to be lowered . Danie

Douw if you decide to swop the diff you could also look at the diff from one of these chinese bakkies of taxis. They run 4y engines.
