Congratulations Douw !
More info about the specific torque converter, gearbox, etc. etc. will be very informative.
One never knows - somebody out there might also be interested in a similar conversion.

Hi Douw
That is a nice and cheap solution. I would have included some form of backing plate for extra strength.
The downside is poor visibility. If I were you I would have just mounted it onto the roof carrier.

Hi Marius
like Charles I do not like it, even though I had one on the bonnet of the Landy. Douw will not be bumping about off road, so he will probably get away with it. Going off road would surely destroy the bonnet and lock in a short space of time. Landy bonnets for carrying spare wheels are specially reinforced, and not only under the wheel but back to front and side to side. The other problem you get is the bonnet does not spring up to the safety and takes 2 people to open the bonnet, one to keep pulling the catch and one lifting.

Hi Douw
I like it, but I would prefer the wheel at the center of the bonnet.
Would visibility really be that bad if the wheel has been mounted at the center ?
I guess the main reason why you have mounted the wheel in that position, is because it makes it easier to open the bonnet ?
Regards

Marius, the left corner visibility is slightly obstructed but very slightly. I can certainly still see everything I need to see. It hasn't created any blindspots. I have a 4 bike rack on the roof and there isn't space for the spare. I don't like the idea of having to move the spare every time I open the boot so I didn't want a rear mount. Ronnie, I do a fair amount of 'off roading' and haven't had any problems. I don't go 4x4ing but then again I doubt that even half the people on this forum do One of the reasons I mounted it to the side is for extra regidity. The bonnet pops open without assistance when pulling the lever, but if it didn't I can fortunately reach the lever and the bonnet at the same time and lift the bonnet ;D Danie, my original plan was to mount it in the centre but when I mentioned it to Ari he suggested mounting it on the side. It made sense for a number of reasons. Some already mentioned, but also because it is similar to the oririnal position (just higher), the air intake vents aren't obstructed, driver visibility isn't obstructed, bonnet is firmer on the side... etc If I every have the need, I could mount another on next to it

Hi Douw, The more I see of the wheel on the bonnet the more I like it! Innovative and you can use the original space under the bonnet to make a hotbox to cook:

Spikes, unfortunately I"ve lost the space under the bonnet because of the engine swop. I agree though, best place to warm up some food on a road trip. Some left over braai meat wrapped in foil and just placed somewhere on the motor for about 20 or 30 kms will do the trick ;D

Hi Douw The question still is "How does your Lada go?" I bet it must be an absolute cracker Regards Vincent Hi Vincent, Sorry if I missed that question in an earlier post, don't recall reading it It goes like a dream. It's super quiet on the road (apart from the wind noise at the corners of the front windows). I haven't driven it hard (max 3500rpm) and the speedo reading is way out. I'm running the speedo off the Cressida box and when travelling on the freeway with the flow of traffic I'm doing 60 on my speedo at 2000 rpm. At that I'm getting over 200kms on 40 litres of fuel so I guess that would mean over 400 true kms on 40L. Even though cruising rpm is only 2000rpm I can easily get ahead of traffic from pull away. I need to still do some work on the suspension and then the Niva will be 100%. Oh, and I've drastically increased the turning circle by fitting the VW rack I have to do a 3 piont u-turn on a soccer field But, I'm very pleased with the results...

Hi Ryk
He went the 2wd route as he does not need 4x4 and it makes the conversion alot easyer.

Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I often browse but never get the time to log in to post. Hope everyone's doing okay. My 'Liewe Genade' has been serving us well. So far this year we have been to the Berg twice and we've just returned from doing the Fish River Canyon hike. I had to pull the box because the spigot-shaft bearing was leaking but other than that I haven't had a single issue. I've got about 35000kms on the Toyota motor already. We'd love to go to Lesotho later this year. Do you guys think my Niva will make it up Sani Pass without 4X4? Douw

Do you guys think my Niva will make it up Sani Pass without 4X4? Douw Hi Douw Apparently this is possible, but not advisable. One good reason not to try this, is because your Lada does not have Low Range any longer. When you drive down the pass, you need to drive in Low Range at some areas, because the engine also helps to slow the car down. Without Low Range the brakes on your Lada will get very hot, which might be unsafe. www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=74216Danie

Hi Douw
Good to see you enjoying the fruits of your labour. As for Sani, if you are travelling fairly light coming down should not be to difficult. 1st gear on the toyota auto is quite low. You got quite load into the back there:)

I think you'll be able to do Sani but you will surely miss the low range.

Oh - I forgot about Douws automatic gearbox.
I could be wrong, but think it the brakes will get stressed even more with an automatic gearbox . The engine will not slow the Lada down - like an engine fitted with a manual gearbox...
