Douw can now be considered as a true Pioneer Marius ;D ;D My steering rack mod will only work on an automatic because I cut a hole in the floor panel for the steering rod to have a better angle. The hole is where the clutch pedal was... The position of the steering rack spline is about 300mm and exactly 90deg from the standard steering rod spline... if that makes sense? After struggling to get the motor started I had to go back to the engine supplier and exchange a faulty distributor. Fitted. One swing. Puuuuurrrrrrrs like a kitten ;D Unfortunately there's no drive on the box... I failed to fill the torque converter with oil before fitment and I think its struggling to fill automatically. Either that or the torque converter isn't fitted properly. Guess I'll have to pull the gearbox out again... I'll try post some pics this evening

Douw, that is some fantastic work done there! I feel very inspired. ;D
What is the part called that connects your air induction kit to your carb?

Thanks Jaco!
The intake system consists of a Dondaldson filter (expensive), a flexible air hose (R120) a rubber 90deg hose (scrap) and a carb cover (R30) that bolts onto the top of the carb...

It's not easy laying on a trolley working under a car with those two fighting over who is going to lie across my chest! Can't count the number of times I've banged my forehead against the underside of my Niva after getting a stomping in the privates!!

Hi Douw That is some job - very nice! Would it be possible to mount the steering rack so that it enters through the cavity of the old steering box? I do like the dog box (and the dogs) Marius

Hi Marius. Thank you.
I guess it would be, I was just concerned about the angle. Like I said in a previous post, the rack spline is at 90deg and about 300mm away from where the standard steering shaft spline would be.
My steering rod consists of: steering wheel to shaft to knuckle to standard shaft to knuckle to modified Fiat steering shaft to knuckle to shortened VW shaft to knuckle to steering rack
I guess with a bit of thought and some creativity it could work from the standard position...

I'm still going to fit one sometime on mine. What tie rod ends did you use?

I'm still going to fit one sometime on mine. What tie rod ends did you use? Charles The steering is unbelievably light. I cut the VW tie rods and welded the Niva threaded tube onto it and that goes onto stock Niva ball joints.

I wasn't very pleased about having to drop the gearbox and decided to try make the job a little easier to do. It took me about an hour to weld up this gearbox jack and it made it super easy to remove the gearbox. Oh, and I'll have to add a new trolley jack to my shopping list...

Hi Douw
You do not even need to go to the bother of welding up a frame, the simple easy way to do it is to position the gearbox on the jack at the correct angle and use a ratchet tie down to lock it securely in place. I put the gearbox in myself first time with no problem. I don't think it took more than 3 minutes to have it ready for the bolts.

Hi Douw That is a very handy conversion - well done! I would not mind one of those. I am thinking of buying a cheap 2 ton for exactly that kind of job. I have always used Ronnie's method and it does work well - but I must say I am impressed - esp if you consider the price tag for the specialized jacks for the job. Marius

Hi Vincent Like you the flux looks better than the welding except on the rare occasions when it comes right.

Thanks for the compliments gents. Gorilla welds are my speciality! Ugly but strong! ;D ;D That gearbox jack sure has helped me a stack during the past week or so. I've fitted and removed the gearbox more times than I care to count! Turns out I had the wrong torque converter fitted and then struggled to find the right one. Turns out there's far more to a torque converter than meets the eye. In fact, an automatic transmission is a marvelous piece of engineering. Anyways, the Niva's running, I cruised slowly around the neighbourhood for a while this evening and everything seems in order. Just need to have a new kazorst fitted tomorrow.
