Hi all, Sorry been away, as well as trying to get the hang of Kite Surfing. Not going to well. But we shall carry on trying. Yip Ari, Cheri is 19, and actually no baseball bat, you would be perfect, very far ( I hope) from where she is. (Joke ok) Things not going to well for Cheri on that side, she has become a bit ill with all the water and sun, seems to cause a bit of infections and dehydration. So a little home sick at the moment, mom needs to go down quiet soon and do the Hitler routine again. Hate it. I have been to see 2 Suzuki 4x4's, 7 Land Rovers and 1 Lada. With the Lada I refused to even start it, the oil was very grey, looked extremely contaminated, the Suzuki's, well nothing to say there apart from need new fillings in my teeth and the Landys, I just want to cry. As the South Africans say, "I am now GATVOL". I'm going to take a box shape BMW, put big foot tyres on, a diff lock and send it down to her. Would be a hell of alot better than all this junk I've tested. Can't believe that people can actually treat their vehicles like they do. So, in other words, I'm actually giving up. Finished, had it. Can't do it anymore. After 6 or 8 months of this rubbish, I need a break. One question to all the wonderful Lada owners out there, I was warned very cautiously by someone, that Lada's have a habit of electric fires. Is this so? Thank guys, great to see all the comments still flying around. Cidni

Hi Cidni
Sorry to see you are having trouble finding a Lada. Just keep watching the forum, and one will turn up. On the subject of Ladas having electrical fires, I have also heard this one. Having had a good look at the electrics I don`t see any reason for this. Perhaps someone on the forum has some information.

Hi Cidni Many older Nivas were refered to as electrical nightmares etc. I am no expert on auto electric stuff but the new gen Ladas (1700's) seems pretty solid in that department. Getting hold of a good second hand 4x4 is not easy - just hang in there - patients will have it's rewards Regards Marius

One question to all the wonderful Lada owners out there, I was warned very cautiously by someone, that Lada's have a habit of electric fires. Is this so? Don't know about them electrical fires, but my Lada was on fire yesterday and the day before doing 130 km/h and still wanting more. Eish, hang in there hunting. The shining armour will appear one day.

Good luck with the Kite Surfing. I also tried that about three years ago , but decided to "retire" after I saw a fit youngster got in trouble with his kite - even the life savers who tried to rescue him eventually battled to get back at the beach. Not for me thanks. Danie

<< Glad to know the baseball bat is a myth. >> I would not bet on that! Not that kite surfing is the most "extreme sport" thing I've seen but I go with Danie on that one. I simply can't understand that "extreme sport people want to live life to the max" yet they stand a very good chance to just do the opposite Back to the fire thing >> I had some smoke from the steering colomn when my indicator switch packed up but none since then. You would most probably find that some bad DIY wiriing as the main cause of such fires in Ladas. I would bet on that! Regards Marius

Maybe thats my problem. 30 cigarettes a day, 4L of coke and hate any temp under 35 deg. Tried paragliding, YUK! Didn't find it fun, running around with a 60 ton sheet strapped to my back, and waiting for enough wind to pick me up. Was a Lada that sometimes winched us up, but it needed serious TLC. Poor little thing, kept looking at me as if it was asking to come home with me. Made my heart sore.
This vibration thing keeps popping up. Think I need to do some research, need to contact my buddies in Poland, that have decided to sail to Iceland. Ke, stupido.
All I know about the vibration thing on older vehicles is that I had to replace all rubbers that had become hard and brittle on the mountings, plus bash whatever looked skew with a 10 pound hammer. (next best thing to baseball bat)

Hi Cidni
I think we all get paranoid about the vibration, me included, and I think if it is minimal and does not detract from the enjoyment of the Niva, it is fine. See Ventz`s comments on this subject.

Hello all. Need to thank everyone for all their help, BUT I have finally come to the end of my search. Found a Suzuki 1995, 200 000km on clock, 5 door, air con, p/s full 4 wheel drive function for 50k. Just fitted heavy duty shocks (Freelander ones fit for R4k plus suspension adjustment), biggest shock was Suzuki Bryanston's R9 300 ex VAT phone call today, for major service (incl Cam Belt) bit upset there thought the 95 had a chain, plus repair to swing arm. Thought I was going to faint. Managed to stay polite, coz need them to make sure this is all in good order for Munchkin down in Bundu Land. Haven't told her yet, going down to meet her and all the rest of the students in Sodwana Bay for the Easter Week with vehicle and surprise her. Will try put a picture in here of vehicle so you can all see. Maybe someone bumps into her and can say Hi one day. Once again, thanks all, after this financial shocker, will have to wait a bit before I explore a Lada for myself. Forgot to mention, even with suspension modifications, the thing jumps like a grasshopper over every bump. Definitely made for the young.

Need to find a grasshopper name, that will be what the car is called. Anyone remember if there was a girl grasshopper in Antz?

Hi Cidni I think the car suits your daughter very nicely. Almost as capable as the Niva and just as bumpy ;D Hope to hear from you on your next purchase - a Lada Niva! Best wishes Marius

Hi Cidni
That price is a total rip off. Also it is high time they stopped giving quotes excluding VAT as it is against the law. You have my sympathy.

Thanks all. You've all been great. The Lada will come in good time. This is the first Asia vehicle I've ever bought. Really had to bit the bullet and buy it. Hopefully it will stand her in good stead. Not to sure I'll allow her to motor all the way to Tanzania in the grasshopper. It makes me feel like I'm sitting in a tin foil box. Will tell her to browse here once I've delivered package. Thats when she gets internet signal. Brat just sends me pics of her on the beach via BBM. Best surprise out of all of this was insurance. I've got a 19 year old insured with a licence less than a year for R560.00 including helicopter call out if needed : the best part, NO EXCESS!! Hunted and hunted. Quotes of R800.00, R900.00 then thought I hit the luck with 1st For Women, was told R555.00 with excess of R2 750.00 thought that was a bargain. OK go ahead, they will only send you the full documents once you have done bank account, full details and blah blah, get the doc's and then carefully read the small print. Excess R2 750.00, plus R$$$$ for under 25, plus R$$$$$ for less than 2 year drivers licence. Full excess would have been R6k. Did I blow up. Now they can't stop the debit order, already logged, have to call them afterwards to ask for refund. SAY WHAT. I can't go to the bank and tell them to not allow any debit order to go off, then the other one will bounce. What a load of Bull Sh*t. Bloody crooks. The ones that didn't do the whole false advertising, Virgin Insurance, my brother's landy is insured with them for R580.00 full cross boarder cover, no excess. I'm paying R860.00 for my Landy at Hollard, and thats on a fleet with 16 odd vehicles that haven't claimed in yonks. So guys, shop around, check your insurance, and check the small print in the contract. Support the correct service provider.
Thanks all.

Hi Cidni I sold the Landy 2 years ago, and at the time I was paying under R300 for fully comprehensive cover with full cover across the border. That was with Zurich ins who I have been with via a broker for some time. Can`t remember if there was an excess or not but due to age i have no excess on any of my insurance. Ronnie

Hi Cidni
How was your trip. Was the brat suitably appreciative?
I do hope that we do not lose you - For you, the Landy can wear a Lada badge ;-)
